My take is no drugs or drink on this gay guy. He will claim some medical condition caused him to put the pedal to the metal. Recently diagnosed. Another possibility he is just plain crazy. Some psych “issues” will be uncovered .....

Correct. Which leaves the question of why he was going so fast only minutes out of the station, knowing a sharp curve was quickly approaching?

Always recall that a defense lawyer is not restrained by truth or facts. Like the paid gunslinger of the old west, the job is to do everything possible to get the client the best possible outcome.

To listen to any of their statements at such an early time is to suspend logic as all that will be said is to accomplish the above. Not saying that the lawyer is lying, just saying that all the hot air is simply setting the stage for what comes later.

Premeditation.

That's what I'm thinking. Like the guy that flew the airplane into the mountain. Only difference, this guy lost his nerve and applied brakes right before. It's fishy he lawyered up even before he left the hospital.

Good people confess to things they didn’t do and later find out it was not their fault, but find they are not effectively able to retract what they already have confessed to. Let’s say there was a problem with the accelerator being stuck...the conductor tries to fix the problem ending in the emergency brake solution...at 106 mph. Evidently he does have a head injury. He confesses, everyone has their responsible fixed idea. The NTSB completes it’s investigation and finds there was a maintenance problem with the accellerator, he’s still screwed because no one will be thinking about it a year from now when the NTSB finishes.

If he’s guilty, it is still up to the government to prove their case. I really doubt there will be much left unknown about him in the next few years while the civil and criminal cases are investigated. This case is going to make numerous lawyers a LOT OF MONEY. Unless he is a saint, he is going to be made to look worse than Satan himself.

Applying the brakes when he did would HELP to make the train jump the tracks.

They've already found it. It's Bush's fault for not having that section of track upgraded for 100+ mph operation.

No silly, that's not plausible enough. However, it's the Republican's fault because they're witholding the money needed to put in the automatic thingie that makes a train brake if it's going too fast. Seriously, that's the narrative coming from at least one Dem Senator (I think he's a senator, he's something in the gov)

If human error, he is still probably looking at charges of manslaughter

He couldn’t figure out how to push a button to reduce speed but he knew how to call 911 on his cellphone.

I find it odd that so much emphasis was made regarding his not being able to find his phone and that it was stuffed away in a bag. I guess the phone records will tell.

I know it is his right to lawyer up, but why would he feel the need to? People died and many are injured. I would lay myself at the mercy of the investigation IF I DID NOTHING WRONG.

Don't talk to the police

"I don’t see a reason to get up to 106mph for 5 or so minutes and then have to dramatically slow down for the 50mph curve?

This kind of operation is not unusual on the Amtrak NE Corridor.

For example, trains leaving Washington Union station will accelerate up to nearly 90mph before having to stop just a few minutes later at the New Carrolton suburban station.

More like a subway, as opposed to a freight train.

What was he doing in the preceding. Ten minutes?

If there was not a technical malfunctiin, my first guess has to do with his cell phone which Im guessing was NOT in his bag where it was suppose to be!

Convenient memory loss is a good way to avoid perjury. I harken back to the Clinton travel office investigation when stephanopolous and company repeatedly giggled through the “I don’t recall” mantra during their testimony.

“The attorney for the engineer who was at the controls when an Amtrak train crashed in Philadelphia says his client has no recollection of a crash that killed at least seven people.”

He could have been doing any number of things.
