Barbara Byrd-Bennett has resigned as chief executive of the Chicago Public Schools amid a federal investigation into a $20.5 million no-bid contract. In a letter dated last week, Byrd-Bennett said she planned to step down Monday. She did not give any reasons for her decision. Byrd-Bennett has been on paid leave since mid-April, when school officials released wide-ranging subpoenas from the federal investigation. Her paid leave was scheduled to end next week and she had not been expected to return to her post. The investigation centers on a $20.5 million no-bid contract at CPS related to an elite nonprofit education group that has long been at the center of city school reform efforts.

Gubmint types protect their own by offering paid leave. You're under investigation/indictment? Hey, sit on the couch and here's your full paycheck. Now...were you really that indispensible before?
'[E]lite nonprofit education group that has long been at the center of city school reform efforts...' The writer can't help himself. Who gets to decide which nonprofit group is 'elite?' Don't they all brand themselves as having special abilities or insights? If reform is needed so badly why are the old guard kept on the job?
Hasn't a CEO (snort) who leads an organization to a $1.1B shortfall already committed a lifetime of wrongdoing with or without a federal indictment?
The mayor knows a dead duck when he sees one, with his Clintonesque note that he is 'saddened.' Translation: you're on your own.

She was appointed to her position by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel in October 2012, replacing Jean-Claude Brizard.
Forcing her to resign is RACIST!
“Dat’s Raciss!” I can hear it now.
