Nigrofog?
Was it Secretariat that got faster as the race progressed? In other words, he ran the last leg of the Belmont faster than he ran the first?
The Preakness is actually 2 years older than the Derby.
Great. Now you said it out loud.
I saw the race on an old B&W TV and have rewatched it many times on YouTube. What an awesome performance. Secretariat has to be the greatest horse ever.
About half way through the race, we got a side view of the line up. I knew American Pharoah would win because starting from the third horse on back, the legs of the horses were almost a blur, they were straining so hard. American Pharoah looked to be merely loping.
Just curious, why do these thoroughbreds have weird names? Whatever happened to names like Flicka and Trigger?
Every name has to be unique for genealogy purposes, IIRC.
Look at the jockey with one of his girlfriends http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3113658/Furious-mom-claims-American-Pharoah-jockey-engaged-daughter-despite-seen-town-kissing-19-year-old-equestrian-blonde-beauty.html
The races were numbered “the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby” and “the 140th running of the Preakness Stakes”.
What weird names?
You can’t duplicate one, and there are limitations on how many characters and how many spaces you can have.
Certainly the greatest of this ear. My dad would argue for Man O’ War, who only ever lost one race in his life, a match race. Both were great horses, and they share a nickname: Big Red.
True, but the Preakness was first run in 1873,, the Derby in 1875.
The Preakness wasn’t run 1891-1893, hence the 141/140 count.
Interesting tidbit: If Secretariat was running the Belmont on Saturday then American Pharoah would have lost by 15 lengths.
