Anyone understand the title case here By U.S. capitalized, by Jackson not? Homer; I don't see the inconsistency. "U.S." is a common editorial shorthand for "United States" and should be capitalized, should it not? And the rest of the article is lower case with 1st letter capitalized, so it all looks consistent. Am I missing something?

OK, now I see it.
It’s a typo. Not gonna overthink this one. “By” is a connector that should not be capitalized normally, but being the first word in the line the copy editor may have mistakenly put it in caps.
Darn it, I said I wasn’t going to overthink it.

Admirable-class minesweeper USS Salute sunk by mine S of Borneo. Oh the irony. All ships are minesweepers. At least once.

but being the first word in the line the copy editor may have mistakenly put it in caps.Maybe it's the convention rather than a mistake. I looked through the pages and found another one on page 6. "In" Last Ditch . . .

I’ll go with convention. They didn’t want to start a line in a headline with lower case, even though grammatically incorrect.

Japan’s conundrum appears quite simple: In order to secure a peace, the dominant military clique must lose their governing prerogatives. Yet that clique is composed of the very people who must approve a peace.
The solution is rather simple: Do your duty to the Nation by sacrificing yourselves, just as you demanded the ultimate sacrifice from your young soldiers, sailors and airmen for the past four years. The war hawks in the Army and Navy are putting themselves first and their country second. At this point, they are watching their people burn, made homeless, and starve. And they would willingly see 20,000,000 or more die just to keep their power and place of privilege in Japanese society. I hold these men in the highest contempt.

I had noticed that By-the-by also, and all I can say is that it’s certainly a relief and a blessing that you both are resolving it. I know I’ll sleep better now.

I hold these men in the highest contempt. Thanks for laying that out--I hadn't yet connected those dots. You have justified your contempt for them in the most eloquent and persuasive way.
You are well aware of the corruption inherent in power. Only One has the character to avoid it, which ultimately is why only He can be trusted with power.

That’s one of several things that bothered me about the movie “Bruce Almighty.” The thought that God would grant any human His power, without granting His wisdom and grace, was disturbing on many levels.
Today is Conundrum Day. The conundrum here is that in society, the men who have the ability to seize power are also the ones most likely to abuse it once they get there. Our country was blessed to be founded by a group of men to whom power was something to be feared, and held responsibly in trust for the benefit of the people. For many years that held true. No longer. Now power is its own end. Or as I like to say, there are two aspects to public life. One is politics, or the art of getting there. The other is policy, or what you do once you are there. We have a system that promotes those who know politics, but know nothing of policy except as it serves politics.
But that is the natural human condition and has been a feature of all nations and empires. They eventually drown in their own excesses. I don’t know why we thought we could remain different.

I dont know why we thought we could remain different.Perhaps we shall look back from an elevated perch someday and see how God used America for a time as a stalwart against dark forces (insert Mordor reference here, as long as we're citing movies). Now that the end times finally are approaching rapidly, He is allowing our influence to wane as He coaxes events into the next phase of His plan to reap as many souls as will come.

Rather than just say I agree with both of you, I'll throw in something from the lighter side.
Rita Zucca really was cross-eyed. Definitely guilty!
