Wild chimpanzees enjoying opportunistic booze-ups on palm wine have helped shed light on a theory about evolution, scientists said on Wednesday.
Chimps in the west African country of Guinea discovered a free treat in raffia palms tapped by local people to extract a sweet, milky sap which then ferments into an alcoholic drink.
The apes scrunched up leaves in their mouths, moulding them into spongy pads that they then dipped into the sap-gathering container, which villagers attach to the tree near its crown.
Tests showed that the beverage's alcoholic content varied from 3.1 percent to a whopping 6.9 percent, the equivalent of strong beer.
Some of the chimps went a little, well, ape.
BS. I had a dog once that loved beer....................
Yeah me too my childhood pit bull love drinking my dad beer LOL!
man evolved surrounded by fermented fruit, cannabis and magic mushrooms.
our natural state is to be drunk, stoned and sexing in a forest full of fruit
This dog I had would sniff around and if you happen to put your beer down where she could get it, it was HERS...........................
Sounds roughly like the Garden of Eden, to me.........................
What the hell else is there to do in the jungle...?
It seems that alcohol consumption would be a deterrent to evolution. A drunk ape, or any other animal for that matter, is easy prey to a predator..................
Laughable.
But I like the drunk monkey pic you posted!

“ERRRRRRRRPPP!!!”
A “whopping” 6.9%?
Really?
However, a sentient being that observes it likes being intoxicated will seek out further ways of being intoxicated, so yes, that could speed along civilization.
I’ve always wondered about beer.
Wine, I can see, could be discovered accidentally by fermented fruit juice left in a container for a period of time.
But beer, that takes a process, chemical reactions, knowledge of yeasts and a whole bunch of grains that would otherwise be food.
So, how did the ancients ‘discover’ beer?.....................
You know what my pit bull dog least my father offer him beer he drink out of previous empty can yeah he would drink the beer
It takes knowledge to perfect, yes. But wild yeasts and primitive grain storage could positively give rise to fermented alcoholic grains.
Most of the very early beers start with bread and warm water. I can see where a soup recipe went awry and beer was born.
or someone’s bread got rained on in a warm temperature, possibly during travel, people ate it because they were hungry, and wow, look at the effect.
