Senator Discloses Parkinson’s, Still Plans to Run in ’16 (Isakson, GA)

Sen. Johnny Isakson announced Wednesday that he suffers from Parkinson’s disease, but will still run for re-election in 2016.

The 70-year-old Georgia Republican said in a statement the disease has not impeded his senatorial duties and pointed to the fact he sits on five committees, two of which he chairs.

“I am busier and have more responsibility today than ever before in my political career, and I couldn’t be happier about that,” Isakson said. “I remain devoted to public service, to my state and to my constituents. I am eager to take my record of results to the voters of Georgia as I run for re-election in 2016.”

Following the announcement, the Senate’s leaders voiced their support for Georgia’s senior senator.

“No one works harder than Johnny Isakson, who is the only Senator chairing two committees in the Senate,” Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said in a statement. “This diagnosis will not slow him down one bit.”

Minority Leader Harry Reid expressed similar sentiments in his own written statement.

“Senator Isakson is tough. Johnny has represented the people of Georgia with distinction and honor in the Senate. Today’s announcement has shown his tremendous courage in his fight against Parkinson’s and his resolute determination to not let it take control of him,” the Nevada Democrat said.

He needs to retire gracefully before he is carried from his seat a la Byrd, Thurmond, etc.

Late onset Parkinsons is brutal.

I hope a viable candidate runs against him in the primary. Isakson has already pi$$ed off conservatives here in GA....

Its hard to keep a RINO down. Isakson is a POS that we never should have elected. I voted for Herman Cain agains’t him in the primary and then in the general had to vote for him to stave off a Dem. Some things never change. Have not voted for him since. He needs to be primaried next year.

He’s also infected with RINOvirus.

I’ll do my best to help replace him with a conservative.

There are no other proclamations from politicians that chap my ass more than this one. They serve themselves and their donors. That's it.

“Here’s Isakson’s pathetic record:”

No wonder Dingy Harry is touting him! He needs to be primaried. So does Harry for that matter. In fact, the country is in grave danger until we get rid of about a dozen of the “antique RINO” Senators, starting with Urine Hatch.

He should not run. Have some friggin dignity Johnny.

Derrick Grayson (Black fellow, got 1% in 2014) is running against him, but he’s not gonna prevail. Only a strong candidate can upend an incumbent in the primary.

It’s still possible that he won’t run. I don’t wish him a deteriorating condition, but it’s possible. Perhaps he’s waiting until the last minute so he can anoint a successor.
