San Bernardino: Broken City
Los Angeles Times ^ | June 14, 2015 | Joe Mozingo

With a rake and a mask, the motel manager steps carefully into Room 107.

This afternoon, Sam Maharaj will evict a couple and their 4-month-old baby for not paying their bill. The mother sits on the side of the bed, still twitching from slamming methamphetamine the night before.

Whenever you read a piece like this the most important thing is what is left out. Today the City of San Bernardino is 80% non-white. In 1970 non-Hispanic whites made up 66% of the population. Preview of what Ann Coulter is warning us.

People have left the inner cities and urban areas. Same deal for Baltimore, Memphis, Detroit, and Nashville.

Wow, what a truly depressing article.

I’m not too familiar with southern California but I didn’t think San Bernardino had gotten THAT bad.

But it is for the children!!!!

and

Public unions are evil!

During several boom-and-bust waves, homeowners sold or lost their homes to investors and speculators. Some landlords see little return in keeping their properties well-maintained.

“They’ll bleed the property until it’s blighted and then desert it,” Morris says.

When the recession hit, San Bernardino’s foreclosure rate was 3.5 times the national average. It was inevitable: Only 46% of San Bernardino’s working-age residents have jobs — the lowest figure in the state for cities anywhere near its size. And so the statistical landslide built momentum as property and sales taxes fell by more than a third in recent years.

As the economy unspooled, the police and fire unions kept shoveling money into council members’ campaigns. In 2008, over Morris’ objections, the council gave them a generous gift. Employees of the Police and Fire Departments could retire at 50 years old and their pensions would give them 3% of their final pay for every year they had worked.

A fire battalion chief making $148,000, could retire at that age and collect $133,000 a year for life — with increases for cost of living.

By 2012 the city was spending 72% of its general fund on the Police and Fire Departments, mostly on salaries and pensions — compared to Los Angeles, which spends 59% of its general fund on those services. More than half the sworn fire personnel earn more than $150,000 a year according to city records.

It's amazing that the LA times printed this bit...

It’s one thing to be down on your luck and another thing to be a filthy pig. It’s a shame that the poor little kid isn’t living with a family member who could take care of him. There’s no excuse for living in your own garbage.

“What is slamming methamphetamine?”

Drink 50 cups of coffee. Now bang your head into the wall repeatedly for 10 hours. After the 50th time, sit on the bed and watch whatever is left of your life be raked out of the room by people with surgical masks.

Isn’t San Bernardino the porn capital of the world? Or is it another LA area city?

Yes, but I wouldn't recommend your relocating there for only that reason!

San Fernando Valley. But LA now requires actors to wear protection, so it’s moving elsewhere.

Hey, I read it on Free Republic.

I visited San Berdoo one time with my father-in-law who wanted to see his sister there while we were in LA on business. I drove out there and saw the depressing seeds of all the ills mentioned in the article. This was over 20 years ago so it had been building for some time. It was really a bummer to go there.

In 1940, California was 95.5% white, with Hispanics being counted as white. 1.8% were black and 2.7% were other race.

Injecting. The last stop after snorting and smoking.

You're thinking of Chatsworth, an area in the northwest corner of the San Fernando Valley. It's part of Los Angeles.
