13 Senate Dems vote with GOP to advance trade bill

Thirteen Senate Democrats on Tuesday helped advance fast-track trade powers for President Barack Obama after overcoming their own concerns about whether a related aid bill for workers would pass the Republican-controlled Congress.

The final tally on the procedural vote for granting Obama trade promotion authority was 60-37. Five Republicans — including two running for president — broke with the GOP and voted against advancing the bill.

Republicans who voted against advancing the fast-track bill were:

• Susan Collins, Maine

• Ted Cruz, Texas

• Rand Paul, Kentucky

• Jeff Sessions, Alabama

• Richard Shelby, Alabama

Those were the same senators who voted against the measure in late May, with the exception of Cruz, who announced his reversal Tuesday morning. (Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah was also a “no” vote in May, but he did not vote Tuesday.)

Anyone able to break down why they are so horny to pass this thing? I mean I can guess but I’d like to hear from someone on this. Money I guess?

this is why the GOP is the stupid party.

as i understand it, it’s an Obama initiative to strip Congress from it’s constitutional oversight authority on such matters that even the democRATS in Obama’s party found objectionable, so the GOP rides in to the rescue to save Obama’s demand for extra-constitutional powers. there’s not even a need for them to do this. in less than 2 years, Obama will be kicked out of the WH on his lazy arse, at which point the GOP could have reconsidered whether these powers would be helpful to a GOP president.

but no. they had to do it now. because the Chamber of Commerce demanded it. and because crony capitalist big corporations need it now. so the GOP does as it’s told. and now, this will be framed as a GOP big government overreach the minute it’s convenient to the MSM.

truly the stupid party shooting itself in the foot again.

Too late for Cruz to vote against it after he voted for it and explained why a vote for was so obvious.

LA should have vote in Col. Rob Maness, and it would have theoretically been blocked by one vote. Cassidy is pro-establishment; has already cast numerous liberal votes.

Should call them the Corporatist Party...don’t give them a penny anymore for their political campaigns nor vote for them.

What gets me is that GOP is looking like a circus with all these candidates and what a boat load of money that is going to waste. We need 1 candidate not 20, so all these jokers raising money are wasting money and don’t mean business about fixing what is wrong with America!!Q! It’s time they cap spending for campaigns too!

“Too late for Cruz to vote against it after he voted for it and explained why a vote for was so obvious.”

So much potential squandered over this issue that could have easily be postponed for the next guy.

Exactamundo. The Congressional Dems got what they wanted for Obama AND they get to run against it in 2016. GAme, set and match in favor of Team Kenya.

The beltway GOP is too greedy and arrogant to notice Obama, Pelosi and Reid just played them like a fiddle.
