One hundred fifty years too late, the Confederacy may finally be coming to an end. Finishing it off, however, will require more than getting rid of an offensive flag.
Not that the astounding progress this week toward consigning the Confederate battle flag to the ignominy it deserves is a small thing. Flags are among the most important symbols because they signify allegiance — in this case, to a treasonous rebellion that sought the unimpeded right to buy and sell human beings and brutally compel their unpaid labor.
It should not have taken the murder of nine African-American worshipers at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church — committed by a young white man who fetishized the flag — to force the reckoning we now witness:
South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has demanded that the state Legislature pass a measure removing the Confederate flag from the capitol grounds.
Alabama's governor ordered that the flag no longer be flown above his state's capitol. Mississippi is considering altering its state flag to remove the Confederate motif. Wal-Mart, Amazon and other major retailers have announced they will no longer sell merchandise emblazoned with the flag.
There are, of course, diehards. A South Carolina state legislator named Lee Bright — a Republican who happens to be one of the state co-chairmen for Sen. Ted Cruz's presidential campaign — denounced what he called a "Stalinist purge" of the rebel flag and said he will fight to keep it. Happily, he will almost surely fail....

I hope you’re right.... I’m so sick of this. I feel like going out and buying dozens of Confederate flags....
It seems to me that the country, over the past few years, has become well and truly divided. A lot of people -- a lot -- are thinking that the nation is broken and that it needs to be divided and that if politics won't do it, then maybe violence will be needed.
And it is at this moment that the Confederate Flag becomes an illegal symbol.
They know how we feel. They are afraid of how we feel. And Mr. Storm Roof has nothing to do with any of this.
Because, Eugene, only idiots believe the Confederacy was the CAUSE of the murders.

Given this guy’s claim to fame, I don’t think he deserves to be the voice of what is right on anything.
Again a question... Is there ANY PHOTO showing this guy with a Confederate flag?... has the guy written anything about the Confederate flag or anything about the Confederacy?
somehow correlating Roof to the Confederate flag seems to be a total non sequitur because I’ve seen no actual connection between the two ...
am I wrong?... someone show me some actual connection because this seems to be just absurd...
White guy shoots black people ..ergo ...Confederate flag is responsible even if the guy never flew or venerated the Confederate flag ....
This guy Roof seems to have no connection to the the Confederacy that i know of....he just happen the live in the south

I’m not defending the Confederacy I just don’t like bad logic and non sequitur accusations..I’ve seen no actual relationship between this guy in the Confederate flag
If you want to read about murder. Read the accounts of freed slaves going North in the years after the war. The unions did not want them coming North to take jobs, so they met the trains, removed them forceably and killed them by the scores in every heinous manner.

What an idiot. There will always be racists hiding behind that flag. Taking it away will do nothing. Continuing the hate and attacks will make it worse. Both sides need to say “enough is enough” and ignore the media and the politicos that are doing all the can to divide the masses.
