Neither Presidential Candidate has a backbone.
Senator Marco Rubio and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush have responded to SCOTUS’ illegal same-sex marriage ruling by saying that it’s now time to move on. Here’s the senator from Florida:
While I disagree with this decision, we live in a republic and must abide by the law. As we look ahead, it must be a priority of the next president to nominate judges and justices committed to applying the Constitution as written and originally understood
I firmly believe the question of same sex marriage is a question of the definition of an institution, not the dignity of a human being. Every American has the right to pursue happiness as they see fit. Not every American has to agree on every issue, but all of us do have to share our country. A large number of Americans will continue to believe in traditional marriage, and a large number of Americans will be pleased with the Courts decision today. In the years ahead, it is my hope that each side will respect the dignity of the other.
Jeb Bush basically feels the same.
Guided by my faith, I believe in traditional marriage. I believe the Supreme Court should have allowed the states to make this decision. I also believe that we should love our neighbor and respect others, including those making lifetime commitments. In a country as diverse as ours, good people who have opposing views should be able to live side by side. It is now crucial that as a country we protect religious freedom and the right of conscience and also not discriminate.
In other words: Jeb says he’s personally against gay marriage, and believes it should be left to states to define the concept of marriage, but now that SCOTUS has issued its ridiculously illegal ruling, it’s time to move on and start talking about other issues. Or, as Hot Air summarizes it:
Both Floridians seem to concede that the fight against gay marriage is over and that the party should focus on protecting religious liberty from antidiscrimination challenges going forward. No more empty chatter about marriage amendments, no Huckabee-esque bluster about how the Supreme Court cant make law or whatever. The closest either of them get to suggesting that gay marriage might yet be undone is Rubio hinting, very vaguely, about future Supreme Court appointments, but thats pie in the sky. Its unlikely in the extreme that even a conservative Court will revisit todays ruling anytime soon. He and Bush are waving the white flag here and nudging the party to pivot to defending religious Americans right of freedom of association.
This is an easy copout by two men who are so afraid to alienate the donor class that they’re willing to throw all their principles in the dustbin. How is it possible that these two so-called conservatives refuse to understand that this ruling isn’t about same-sex marriage, but about federalism?
Conservatives can’t let SCOTUS get away with this decision, not because they hate gays (they don’t by the way), but because the 10th Amendment has just been nullified. Whether you support or oppose the legalization of gay marriage, that should worry you and be reason to declare war on the Supreme Court.
See, see you mean-old right wing purists! Now that the social issues are out of the way, we can start attracting the moderates and independents! Yeah! /s
I am ashamed to admit that both these men are politicians from my state. Wrong is wrong, even when everyone else says it is right.
Well, they just wiped out half their base.
Unfortunately, this is the death of the Republican party, and it’s a brilliant move by the dems, who were on the verge of extinction.
I wonder how many spines McConnell and Boehner get each week? They start at $50 bucks for plastic on Amazon. Pictures will have to do.
My God, is not a court, nor is my God two useless RINOs.
I never asked for your opinion or theirs.
While I think it’s been a few decades (Reagan’s day) that the Dims were on the verge of extinction, I agree with you 100%. The GOP and Conservatism IS on the edge of extinction.
Demographics are killing us. SCOTUS rulings will not be changed. No. They won’t. Young people are more Dim-like than ever. Our demographic just isn’t going to be around that much longer. If Dims actually vote we are screwed.
And what did we get? We got a bunch of moron GOPe’s who for YEARS have taken what was an advantaged and pissed it away to extinction.
Unbelievable.
I’m sorry boys. Maybe you can apply for a job shining President Cruz’s shoes.
I’m never going to vote for either Bush or Rubio. They are more concerned with fraudulently documented foreigners than they are about the citizens of this country.
Rubio has caused himself extreme damage this week in the eyes of the base.
In one respect that is good. It minimizes the amount of conservatives that would have otherwise voted for him in the primaries. We need to coalesce quickly behind one or two conservatives to eliminate the nightmare of 2012 from repeating itself.
One voter in a hundred knows what federalism means.
One hundred in every hundred understand “respect” and “move on.” Be polite, and get over it. They’re taught this in kindergarten.
Rubio and Bush understand that they’ll lose more votes than they’ll gain, if they stand on principle about issues that almost nobody grasps.
WHY I HAVE AN ILLUMINATED CROSS AS A PROTEST
Why are those so called democrats which belong to a democrat in name only ever being called out on their core beliefs ? Nooo that wouldnt be bi-partisan ! Ask any of those so called GOPES (Government Over the People Elite Statists) campaign advisors about depressing the democrat vote and you get a lecture.Democrat core beliefs showed up with booing the mention of God in 2012 which made it official. Theyve declared a war on religion particularly Christianity.Which I for one now have an illumiuated crucifix at night in my front yard facing the street (Highway) as a statement. And encourage others do as well
A DEMOCRAT apparently doesnt believe theres such a thing as the Ten Commandments or sin because everything that leaves their mouths is a lie. But I have yet to hear a Republican candidate even suggest even in jest mention why democrat lying is part of their core belief ? Never mind the use of their positions promoting clony capitalism campaign contributers financing alternate energy plans spending billions which went belly up at our expense while leaving our infastructure was falling apart......
Why ? Because it isnt being bi-partisan or lets not forget the other trap politically correct.
Ted is our only real choice after this. The rest of them are raising the white flag.
Marco who? Jeb who? Neither of these two even register on my Vote-O-Meter.
dead to me
spineless GOP is best thing ever for the Democrats
it’s like running unopposed
The otherwise has no interest in respecting the so called ‘dignity’ of our position which until just 12 years ago was universally held around the world.
They have in issuing an edict that robs us of our Constitution not only destroyed any ground on which there may be democratic compromised but the very terms by which our coexistence is based.
There subsidence and already well underway war to exterminate us from the face of the earth precludes the possibility of there being peace least of mutual respect.
They have declared that we john them in their sinful insanity or be persecuted out of existences. I know not what others may do but my aledgence to God outweighs all others.
Furthermore my respect for the law as written & practiced for over 200 years and never lawfully changed by any legislative act compels me to resist this evil as I would an invasion no matter how successful. There can be no compromise Liberty or death.
