In an emergency meeting Thursday evening, Columbia City Council passed an ordinance temporarily banning weapons within a 250-foot perimeter surrounding the South Carolina State House grounds.
The emergency ordinance was passed by a 5-0 vote. Councilwoman Leona Plaugh and Mayor Steve Benjamin were absent Thursday. Mayor Pro-Tem Sam Davis presided over Council.
The ordinance was passed in advance of a ceremony planned for 10 a.m. Friday morning at the State House, in which the Confederate battle flag is scheduled to be removed from its pole on the north lawn. While the Department of Public Safety and the Bureau of Protective services have jurisdiction over the Capitol grounds, the Columbia Police Department is responsible for safety in the areas surrounding and contiguous to the borders of the Capitol grounds.

The city's ordinance would temporarily expand the weapons-free zone that already exists for the State House grounds.
"During this period of extraordinary circumstances that have arisen, the City of Columbia believes it is in the best interest of public safety, free speech and freedom of peacable assembly to temporarily extend the existing ban of weapons as enacted by the General Assembly within 250 feet of the borders of the Capitol Complex," the ordinance reads. The ordinance is set to be in effect for 30 days. Anyone caught violating the ordinance faces a $500 fine and 30 days in jail.

They are not banning any weapons. They are simply banning people from legally carrying weapons.
Why not erect a big sign that says “Unarmed Victims Here!” It would have the same effect.

Gosh!! I cannot think of any firearm that cannot, whether manufactured, i.e., ‘zip gun’ by criminal or owned by a patriot, ‘get that far’, whether centerfire, rimfire, cap and ball, flintlock, wheellock, or matchlock!

The point is to ensure that all the victims within 250 feet are unarmed.
No one who would have anything to do with that “ceremony” should ever be considered a victim.

South Carolina has firearm preemption laws, so what gives the Columbia city council the right to declare a gun-free zone that isn’t in the state statutes?
What a bunch of wusses. You can carry openly in the VA assembly building.
Correction...unfortunately you need a CHP in the building. Not on the grounds.
