ST. JOHNSVILLE - It's a powerful, but polarizing point of view. The owner of J.J.'s Sporting Goods announced he will no longer sell guns to Muslims.
The decision is getting mixed reaction both on social media and within the small, tight-knit community of St. Johnsville.
John Swartz says after the attack at the recruiting station in Tennessee, he can't in good conscience sell guns to Muslims.
Swartz said his logic mainly roots from fear of not being able to tell the difference between a radical Muslim and a law abiding citizen. He said that leaves him with little choice, but to put a policy in place.
"It has nothing to do with the individual or the entire community, but I can’t tell the difference. So right now I have very little choice because of my own conscience," said Swartz.
The business owner announced his policy in a post on his store's Facebook page.
"My Facebook post, I thought about this and I said well, there's only one organization that is advocating for the killing of Americans, trying to get local homegrown terrorists, and somewhat succeeding. They're not Canadians. They're not French. They're Muslims," said Swartz.
He wrote the post about a week ago. Since then he's backtracked a bit, saying he wouldn't sell guns to anyone he doesn't feel comfortable with, no matter who they are.
“I'm not trying to be racist. I have to look at who the enemy is and just say that I'm sorry, but this is kind of brought on by themselves," said Swartz.
The Facebook post is the talk of the community with mixed reaction. Bob Vosburgh served in Vietnam. He said he backs any dealer that takes the same approach.
"That really hurts us as service member. They're piling Marines up like cordwood, you know? I've got a bad taste in my mouth over that. I'm sorry it has to be that way because I'm sure there are good ones, but until we get a grip on them the sale has to stop to all of them," said Vosburgh.
Alex Countryman has lived in the village his entire life and said he's disgusted by the racism.
"As a member of the community, as a New Yorker and as an American, I'm embarrassed by the obvious Islamaphobia," said Countryman.
He said he’s embarrassed that people harbor negative feelings based on the religion of others.
As of Thursday night, Swartz stands by his decision.
"I have to make a policy and that's what my policy is," he said.
Swatrz said he follows the Constitution. So if the government compels him to reverse his decision he will obey, but that also means he may end up selling the business.

This is an interesting legal situation.
Under most circumstances, business that provide “public accommodations”, goods and services, cannot legally discriminate.
However, there are some limits to this. For example, a pharmacist cannot be compelled to provide narcotics to someone he even suspects could be an illegal user. In this case, a gun store owner cannot be compelled, and is actually forbidden, from selling a gun to any number of prohibited persons, or if he *suspects* there *might* be an illegal use of the gun. Or that the buyer is a “straw buyer”.
Would he harbor negative feelings towards someone that advocated the extermination of the Jews? How about if they made it a part of their religion?

We had a grocer that would not honor our ration stamps during WW II, because we had a German name. My dad joined the USMC during WW I. He was also born here. Not everyone is a threat just because of their origin. Muslims are people too, its a small percentage that is causing the trouble.
The ones I have met over the last 2 decades were decent folk, they intermarried and raised good Americans, not the bomb making ones. They want the American dream and most are employed in professional jobs that required a lot of studying. If one of their kids were like the jihadists, they’d turn them in. WW II we had Germans sabotaging and spying, but they didn’t represent the entire German American population. The ones who were suspected were interned in special camps, LOL, built by the Democrat controlled administration. LOL, the only internment camps we had were those built under the Democrats? (Not Bush and Cheney) Surely some of you have Muslim friends, who fit in like anyone else. I think mine are Liberal Muslims. My best man at a Christian wedding was an Arab.

Nice try, but no dice. There is no parity with the Nazi Party versus the non-Party Germans in WWII - the analogy is false. There's no such thing as a moderate Muslim. There are only overt, and covert, Muslims. Their entire religion teaches them that non-Muslims must be made into slaves or killed - no exceptions. Islam also teaches that they are allowed to lie and misrepresent themselves and their religion to promote the goals of Islam, especially Jihad.
You don't have any Muslim friends. You think you do, but you don't. They are merely biding their time until you are put into yout proper place. THAT is Islam, and there's NO Muslim who will disagree with it in public (that I've ever heard of, at least).
