Family Privilege August 6, 2015
As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God.
John 1:12
When I was in primary school in Ghana, I had to live with a loving and caring family away from my parents. One day, all the children assembled for a special family meeting. The first part involved all of us sharing individual experiences. But next, when only blood children were required to be present, I was politely excluded. Then the stark reality hit me: I was not a child of the house. Despite their love for me, the family required that I should be excused because I was only living with them; I was not a legal part of their family.
This incident reminds me of John 1:11-12. The Son of God came to His own people and they rejected Him. Those who received Him then, and receive Him now, are given the right to become Gods children. When we are adopted into His family, the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God (Rom. 8:16).
Jesus doesn't exclude anybody who is adopted by the Father. Rather, He welcomes us as a permanent part of His family. As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name (John 1:12).
Thank You, Father, for making it possible for me to be Your child. Im grateful to be Yours and not to have to worry about whether You will remove me from Your family. I am Yours and You are mine.
Assurance of salvation is not in what you know but who you know.
The gospel of John was written to testify that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (John 20:31). From the onset, John presents Jesus as the Logos, the self-existent, pre-existent, omnipotent, eternal, creator God who spoke everything into existence (1:1-5). John also presents Jesus as God IncarnateGod in the flesh (vv. 9-14). The eternal God entered the world He created and became human like us in order to live with us (vv.11,14; Matt. 1:23). The New Testament also affirms Christs humanity (Gal. 4:4; 1 Tim. 3:16, Heb. 2:14-17). Sim Kay Tee

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR OUR AMERICAN HEROES AND FOR OUR BELOVED NATION!

Gen. George Washington and his Troops Marching To Valley Forge December 1777 |
GEN. GEORGE WASHINGTON THE PRAYER AT VALLEY FORGE
"Let Tyrants Shake Their Iron Rod" William Billings Mixed District Choir, Fairfax, Virginia (Click)
IN THE COLDEST and darkest days of the American Revolution, General George Washington raised his prayers for the survival of his beleaguered Army and of the new Nation. The Lord answered his prayers, upheld his Army through a punishing nadir to everlasting Glory, and bestowed His Manifold Blessings upon the new Nation.

FROM THE BRAVE, albeit weary, ill-equipped, and untrained volunteers who marched into Valley Forge on 19 December 1777 arose, with the help of some gallant friends from across the waves, the cohesive fighting force that became the United States Army, global defender of Freedom and scourge of Tyrants.
AS GENERAL WASHINGTON lifted his prayers on high in that bleak Winter, let our prayers now rise like a fountain for our Heroes in the American Armed Forces who seek to secure the benefits of Freedom on behalf of a people hungry for them. Father, look on our prayers for them with favor, guide their steps in righteousness and gather them in the shelter of Your Healing Wings. Bless and uphold them in the performance of their Mission. Through Jesus Christ, Your Son, with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever, Amen.

HEAVENLY FATHER, Lord of the Nations, unto Your Divine Mercy we commend the souls of these valiant men and women who have fallen in the service of our Beloved Nation and in defense of the Freedoms we hold dear. We pray that You gather them in Your Loving Embrace, that You cause Your Countenance to shine upon them, and that You vouchsafe their souls to dwell eternally in Your Divine Presence. Through Jesus Christ Your Son, with the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever, Amen.

Daddy was in the combat engineers in WWII. He must have been a pretty good scrounger as he brought home a Luger, a P-38 and a .32 auto which he described as an Austro-Hungarian pistol. He also acquired a mint Leica 35 mm rangefinder.
His battalion was sent to Berlin soon after the war ended and most of the men would feed various German children who were in pretty sad shape. The two Daddy adopted were a brother and sister named Fritz and Ingrid. Those kids were how Daddy got the Luger.
It was the most desired souvenir of the war. One day Daddy just asked Fritz if he could get him a Luger. He said Fritz took off running and after around an hour brought him a sack which contained a Luger, holster and spare mag.
Daddy never asked him where he got it but was sure it had been buried as it had a lot of dirt in the sack.
Daddy later sold it to his first cousin who was the Florida Golden Gloves champion.

My favorite story:
My Uncle Glenn served on the USS Dragonet, a submarine in the Pacific. He tells the story of the time they were caught in a typhoon and had to ride it out on the surface. Three days of constant motion, occasional baloney sandwiches and seasickness.
He always said: "I was one of the lucky ones, I had a top bunk. The guys I felt sorry for were the poor bastards on the bottom."
Uncle Glenn turned 93 this year.

It was 1944 - I was 5 years old. With my parents at a fun fair.
I wanted to ride on the dodge'em cars and persuaded my father to let me sit in the driver's seat.
At a very severe bump I hit my head on the steering wheel and split my brow open.
My father was so mad (at himself) and would not let me out of the car.
When the ride ended, my frantic mother tried to lift me out of the car - a lot of blood at this point.
Next to her stood a soldier in uniform with his arm in a sling and a bandage on his head.
Look, said my mother to her crying child, this brave soldier is not crying.
I immediately quit bawling and acquired a respect for the military which exists to this day - 70 years later.

1984 - The Pigeon Incident
In 1984 I was on my first overseas deployment. My ship stopped in Pearl Harbor and I and a few shipmates went to a hotel in Waikiki and rented a room. While my buddies were out on a beer run, was out on the balcony enjoying the scenery and eating Doritos. A pigeon landed on the handrail and feeling generous, I tossed a Dorito to the deck for the pigeon.
Immediately the sky was darkened with pigeons headed for my balcony and before I could move I was knee deep in pigeons. I tossed a handful of Doritos to the pigeons and soon had a feeding frenzy on my hands. Having consumed a few beers prior to these events, an alcohol induced idea entered my mind.
I opened the sliding door to the balcony and backed into the room. I tossed another handful of Doritos to the deck of the room and a good number of pigeons followed me into the room. I back across the room tossing Doritos and the pigeons followed. I opened the door to the hall, and seeing no one about, I backed into the hall tossing Doritos. The pigeons followed. I backed down the hall and tossed a few more Doritos. Some of the pigeons followed. Feeling like the Pied Piper, I led my pigeons to the elevator and pressed the down button. I tossed a few more Doritos to the pigeons while waiting for the elevator. When the elevator door opened (empty thank God) I tossed a handful of Doritos in, and some of the pigeons went in after them. I reached in and pressed the lobby button and the pigeons were on their way to the lobby.
At this time the pigeons in the hall panicked and started flying up and down the hall. I retreated to my room and started ushering the stragglers still in my room out of the balcony door. By the time I had my room clear of pigeons I heard a commotion in the hall. Peeking out in the hall I saw some hotel staff trying to catch the pigeons flying in the hall. A very short time later my shipmates returned to the room laughing their asses off. They said that they were waiting in the lobby for the elevator, when the door opened and a bunch of pigeons flew out. People waiting for the elevator were screaming and running around. Over a few beers I told them how the pigeons got on the elevator. When we checked out two days later, there were still pigeons in the rafters in the lobby.
Coming home from deployment, my ship again stopped in Pearl Harbor and we went back to the same hotel. This time we were denied a room. I can’t imagine why.
