Businessman Donald Trump has surged in the polls in the race for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, and evangelicals, an important base for the Republican Party, appear to favor him as well.
Ahead of Thursday nights debate in Cleveland, the first debate of the GOP primary, Trump appears to be tapping into Republican voters deep fears over the economy. And Republican-leaning white evangelicals, who hold sway in early primary states like Iowa and South Carolina, seem to closely mirror other Republicans.
According to a Washington Post-ABC News poll conducted July 16-19, 20 percent of Republican-leaning voters who are white evangelicals support Donald Trump, compared to 24 percent of GOP voters overall and 25 percent of other white Christians (non-evangelicals and Catholics) who support him.
More at llink.
It looks like many Evangelicals are also LIV’s (Low Information Voters ).
There is a true Evangelical in the race whose policies and values align with theirs, yet, they choose a secular guy who almost never goes to church.
Especially Huckleberry. i bet he thought he had them locked down.
When they found out I was for Trump, they loosened up immediately and I spent several hours discussing the presidential campaign with them. They all feel that it's about time that an outsider like Trump came into the government at the top position and started shaking things up. They see Trump as a man who can get things done. They realize that he's not as conservative or religious as they might prefer but they see this as an opportunity to move things in the right direction.
Trump hits a chord with them when he talks about politicians being "all talk, no action."
And if any Evangelicals had confidence he could turn those policies and values into public policy, he'd be their favorite.
I just heard that on our local talker. Amazing.

Perhaps they realize that we don’t need an evangelical President as much as we need one who will let us be evangelical and is in it to win it. Jesus didn’t spend a lot of time with the leaders of nations telling them to spread the word.
The true evangelical has his chance to win them over tonight. I hope he hits one out of the park.
yet, they choose a secular guy who almost never goes to church. As evidenced by your comment regarding free thinking Evangelicals, church is where self-righteous hypocrites gather.
You don't have to belong to a organized religion or enter a building to worship god.
Your post is vile.....you are insulting many on this forum!
How dare you!
Yeh what to do-— Cruz is the real deal Christian as is Walker and Huckabee. Trump is not an anti-christ or an evil witch like you know who. He can grab a lot of Indies and minority voters. I’m ok with it.
manu evangelicals ARE lo fo voters....the Huckabee followers come to mind.
Wow, isn’t that troubling? It is to me.
Agreed. I think Trump is a regular church goer, not that that is the conclusive sign of a Christian. The fact that he wants to create jobs and help people might be a better indicator.
I know a lot of people that are Christians that support both Trump and Cruz. I don’t see a conflict.
Thanks for your passionate comments.

I wonder what is most important to Trump. He's been married 3 times. He implied he put his work ahead of his family. That means money and success is more important to him than his family. That could also mean he could sell out for success or money. His evolution on issues tells me he's Romney II. Why should we trust a man who doesn't even do right by his family? If he can't keep his vows, why would he keep his word on conservative issues? He could wheel and deal big time on K Street. Who's to say Hillary won't make him a deal if he runs third party should he lose the primary.
Many believe our biggest problem in this country is immorality. People don't fear God or mans laws. Every issue conservatives stands on is base on doing what is right. We have high taxes because many won't work or abuse the system, abortion... Hollywood and liberals everywhere including in school tell our children sex of any kind with anyone is good and being a virgin is crazy. We have lawlessness in the streets and within our government (illegal immigration....), politicians are power hungry and greedy,......
I think we needs someone with a firm foundation. I know there will never be a perfect person, but God help us if we compromise so much.
I'm hoping for Walker or Cruz.
The vote is for President - not for minister....
Donald Trump: proudly unrepentant.

You might want to read what the Founding Fathers thought about it before you say that.
