ATLANTA — A new poll indicates Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump would cruise to victory in Georgia if the presidential primary were held today.

The exclusive Channel 2 Action News poll conducted by Landmark/RosettaStone comes as Republican presidential candidates prepare for their first televised debate.

Trump leads the pack with 34 percent of GOP voters while Hilary Clinton has an even bigger lead among Georgia Democrats -- 56 percent.

The poll conducted on Wednesday included 600 voters from each party and has a margin of error of 4 percent.

Trump leads a pack of 10 candidates named in the poll. They include Jeb Bush at 12 percent, Scott Walker at 10 percent, Ben Carson and Mike Huckabee at 8 percent, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio at 5 percent, John Kasich at 4 percent, Chris Christie at 3 percent and Rand Paul at 2 percent.

Clinton heads up a much shorter list of Democrats including Vice President Joe Biden at 18 percent, Bernie Sanders at 11 percent, Jim Webb at 2 percent and Martin O'Malley at 1 percent. Biden has not yet announced if he'll run for president.

Trump will stand at center stage during Thursday's prime-time debate in Cleveland, thanks to his status as the top performer in several recent national polls. Only 10 candidates were invited by debate host Fox News to participate in the main event, with the remaining seven relegated to a pre-debate forum.

Ahead of the debate, Trump said he doesn't plan to attack his rivals. "I'd rather just discuss the issues," he said Wednesday on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Emory political science professor Merle Black told Channel 2 political reporter Lori Geary that Trump needs to tone it down if he wants to make it to the convention.

"What Trump is doing with this shoot from the mouth style, he's showing a type of leadership here that a lot of Americans don't like to see in a president. they want someone more cautious, more reserved," Black said. "I think Trump expresses a lot of the resentment and anger that many of the conservatives feel."

The Democratic Party announced Thursday morning their first presidential candidate debate will take place in Nevada on Oct. 13.

So many in the South truly believe in the return of a Clinton to give them “peace and harmony”.

Well, that’s sorta sad... You have one of the strongest groups of candidates on the republican side in a long time and it’s being led by a vacuous, bomb-thrower who won’t have ANY chance of governing...

Scott Walker doing well at 3rd place. I can live with that for now. He is double digit support to which is important. He is our best shot to save America. Last night although not flashy, he was the most Presidential.
