Donald Trump the ‘loose cannon’: U.S. Republicans all but powerless to stop billionaire’s candidacy

A new poll suggests the bombastic billionaire property mogul Donald Trump is widening his lead over more traditional rivals for the Republican nomination with 24% support, double that of former Florida governor Jeb Bush.

For the party of Lincoln, this is a problem. Trump might be the candidate to beat in the primaries, but even many Republicans think he cannot win the White House. But when it comes to dealing with the threat Trump poses to its fortunes, the party has an even bigger problem — it is all but powerless.

* * * * * * *

The Republican Party has been here before. Briefly, in 2011, Trump led Mitt Romney in the polls. But this time is different. After losing to the incumbent Democrat Barack Obama in 2012, the Republican Party made an effort to stamp out its bozo eruptions, to let Obama’s support deflate naturally, to quietly preserve its own momentum, and put forth an electable candidate in 2016.

As the national party machine kept closer tabs on its candidates, it grew increasingly wary of rogues and demagogues, people like Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann who brought so much attention for so little benefit. Trump’s popularity, despite comments seen as disparaging to Latinos and women, both key demographics, has blown that strategy out of the water. And the party is powerless to stop it. At least it seems that way.

Not sure that the writer has the savvy to understand the difference between a “problem” and a solution. He is probably just trying to sound relevant. But if you have to try, you probably do not have what it takes.

If the rest of field cannot overtake Trump, what genius would believe someone who can’t beat him in the primaries could beat the Dem candidate?

Too bad pubbies. So you threw a party and an uninvited guest showed up and took over the microphone with some bad karaoke.

Sounds like your party must have been real boring to begin with.

IMO Trump is probably the only GOP candidate who can win the general election. He will pull the indies and the disenchanted Democrats.

The eGOP is crapping their pants. If Trump becomes the candidates he will clean house and they will lose their jobs!

Now may be the moment to hand it over to these “movement conservatives,” to let Trump go down like Barry Goldwater in 1964, then build a new political party for a new electorate, in which millennials have just demographically surpassed baby boomers, and politics is learning to look beyond the representation of rich white men. ............................ There will always be white rich men in the background supporting other rich men. Its rare that one so rich would take on the establishment. Yes he could be another Barry Goldwater, but he may end up as another Ronald Reagan, and that worries the left. They seem to be OK with the old “poor” white woman now on the Democrat Ticket, which I am sure the Millennials are so excited over.

This article validates my belief that the “party” is all about the party, and not preserving our culture, defending or Constitution or observing voter mandates.

More truth can be found when the article talks of Trump threatening their fortunes. Yes, when big business puts forth money to keep the cheap labor that has illegally flowed into the country, their fortunes are in danger.

And to refer to Sarah as a rogue defines the GOP as anti-American as the Rats.

The current Republican Party has let us down and they want to remain faithful? The Republican Party has too many turn coats we call GOPe and the party will never survive unless we have a Trump like President. Cruz is my man but without Trump we would never had a chance. Trump is our hero, hopefully Cruz will be our President.

Yes he will, and what I’m seeing here are people who don’t like Trump are either democrats or GOPe’s, or RINOs along with MSM.
