Roger Ailes to Donald Trump: 'We resolve this now...or go to war'
CNN Money ^ | August 14, 2015 | By Brian Stelter

Posted on 08/14/2015 10:43:15 AM PDT by Brad from Tennessee

Fox News chairman Roger Ailes woke up Monday morning thinking that his network and Donald Trump's campaign had reached an understanding.

After a weekend's worth of stressful phone calls, the tacit agreement -- he thought -- was that Trump would stop attacking Ailes' biggest television star, Megyn Kelly, in interviews and tweets.

Then came an ugly surprise. Trump said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that he thought Kelly should apologize to him.

"This was the final straw for Roger," according to a source close to the situation.

Ailes' office called Trump's office. We "can resolve this now," Ailes said to Trump, "or we can go to war."

As we all know by now, war was averted. There is mutual respect between the two master negotiators. Trump has stopped criticizing Kelly. And Fox has stopped ignoring Trump on its shows. ailes trump truce

But if this is a truce, it's a tenuous one. In recent days Trump loyalists have leaked unflattering claims about Ailes, and Fox staffers have privately likened Trump to a crazy person.

With detente in place, each side is now being more careful with their words. . .

CNN as usual is FOS. Ailes doesn’t tell trump the rules, and Chris Wallace is still out telling bald-faced lies about Trump.

Well, watch "The Five." You have a Bushie (Perino), a lib grandstanding lunatic (Geraldo), a Trump-hating smart-aleck (Guttfeld), and a reasonable prosecutor (Guilfoyle). The only one who even tries to understand Trump much is Bolling, whom Geraldo threatened to "punch out."

So Trump is not getting any favorable press from Fox.

Go to War?

That equals a huge ratings boost for Fox and more publicity and press for Trump.

Go to War = win/win for both parties.

Good description. Spot on.

Trump gets fair treatment at 7 and 10. That’s it.

“Go to war” is an empty threat. Trump would parlay that situation into an earned media/internet bonanza, and it would be a battle that Fox News would lose. Trump would be a folk hero even more than he is now.

A request for comment was left on Megyn Kelly's work voicemail, but no reply is expected until Ms. Kelly returns from a 10 day suspension vacation.

Therefore, already knowing what you posted is true, Ailes likely did not use that term.

Fox News — “We report, you decide.” What a crock of BS that slogan is.

It’s horribly wrong for the head of a News organization to threaten to “go to war” with someone for criticizing them.

Lou Dobbs did a really positive interview of Trump the other day. Dobbs is probably my favorite program now. Friends is still decent.

It would have been both a morally wrong and stupid threat for Ailes to make, but I try never to underestimate the power of hubris.

Like I said, it's CNN so who knows? Ailes’ job is keeping ratings up so the advertising keeps coming and FOX makes plenty of money. Trump is good for FOX News ratings.
