Who in GOP field will seize Trump's populist mantle?

Neither party's elites represent the majority's views on an issue such as immigration; Trump does.

Trump often promotes nastiness in pursuit of legitimate policy concerns. Yet his populism also taps into real frustration with two thing The classic answer is to take the wind out of his sails by co-opting (and moderating) some of his positions, thus not allowing him to be the only candidate tapping into populist frustrations.

Even with all of his clownery, Trump won't implode until folks have another choice that satisfies the feelings he evokes. One or more of the other Republican candidates needs to draw stark contrasts between themselves and Trump, without diminishing the voters' needs and frustration.

They also need to harness the energy he has exploited. To give those frustrated voters a reason to believe they can take the country to a better place, can connect us together rather than divide or marginalize groups of us in order to win elections.

If you look beyond the hype, Trump already has peaked in the polls — at least for now. According to an average of national polls by RealClearPolitics, he was on top on the day of the first Republican presidential debate nearly a month ago, at 24.3 percent; his support softened that day, and his average now is down to 22

There is a difference between Trump's legitimate populist appeal and his dangerous demagoguery.

Populism is a funny thing, however: You cannot create it on command, and the kind of rage needed to foster it is sustainable for only so long before it fades.

The person who can successfully seize that mantle has yet to emerge — but one will. And if that person is a good leader, then he or she can take this movement and the people over the finish line.

My problem with the article is that I’m not at all sure it is just an angry vote for Trump. I think his message on illegal immigration is resonating, and it’s too late for any of the others to steal his thunder on this issue. They have had lots of time to lay their own plan out there and haven’t done so, because the majority of them are for open borders.

We watched in horror as thousands and thousands of illegals poured over our border, and no one lifted a finger to try and stop it. We weren’t even allowed to see the images on tv, nor did we have access to where these illegals were taken. So, this goes beyond just being angry - it is a matter of national security.

The other candidates are stuck with what they have said in the not too distant past. Rubio in particular is stuck with his own history.

Why is it a candidate who echoes the sentiments of the conservative voters is labeled “populist” but a libtard who promises the gibmedats more free stuff is something else?

Trump is who he is. Anyone who tries to be Trump now will fail because we already know who they are.

In all that is going on for the formation of the presidential candidates, there is one factor that the idiotic ‘newsmakers’ have overlooked.

I have yet to find John Q. and Jane Q. Public, make their own website to stump for their candidate of choice, with the impact, growing viewership, and national media attention, as those two women who have created and are maintaining their website, ‘WeBeSisters.com’, or as maybe more folks know of them, “the two black women stumping for Trump”.

‘To seize the mantle’, implies an act of theft, or murder of some kind, or an evil trick of Esau’s proportion.

Should that happen, this nation will not have a following of the GOP-E, wishing to be the Pied Piper, again. They will be so angry, that a third party will happen, and win.

There is a difference between Trump’s legitimate populist appeal and the dangerous demagoguery of the socialist stiffs running against him and ruining the republic.

Yep. They don’t get it or us. To think for one second that a Trump supporter is going to fall in love with someone who “moderates” their message is nonsensical. Moderation of message is what brought us here. We want someone who is crystal clear on their views not a slimeball delivering a platform with enough wiggle room to do a 360.

It’s almost like a man who cheated on his wife multiple times and refuses to wrap his head around the fact that this time she’s taking the house and kids and she means it.

For the love of God PLEASE stop using the term “populist” to describe Trump. The “populists” were inflationists and socialists who wanted gubment to OWN private businesses. I’ve told Selina this before in a private e-mail yet she continues to use this ridiculous term.

1) It is not just an angry vote, as you note. People believe he can lead on a number of fronts.

2) Wishful thinking on Zito's part that Trump has "peaked." A few people in the lower tier---Fiorina---and in the lower half of the top tier---Cruz, Carson, Rubio---have gained some, dividing up the vote more.

Carson, Cruz, or Fiorina can't win, I don't think.

Rubio can mount a significant challenge if every other GOPe coalesces behind him.

However, when the---to use her horrible and ill-conceived word---"populist" candidates who can't win align behind Trump, he will have more than enough to defeat Rubio, an likely before Super Tuesday is over.

Well, I beg to differ. I think Cruz’s turnout last weekend, and Trump’s incredible Mobile crowd do indicate the John Q.s are getting involved.

It's not "populism" that brings people to Trump, it is one very simple fact:

Why do these people think that being angry precludes being right? The country IS dead and Trump can’t do anything but help. He can’t make it worse.

“Trump already has peaked in the polls...he was on top on the day of the first Republican presidential debate nearly a month ago, at 24.3 percent; his support softened that day, and his average now is down to 22 percent.”

In your dreams. The latest (Reuters) poll, not yet incorporated by RCP, has Trump at 32%, that should drive his average up to at least 24%.

“They have had lots of time to lay their own plan out there and haven’t done so, because the majority of them are for open borders.”

...and the handful that actually agrees with Trump on immigration were AFRAID to speak up either because Republican ‘advisers’ (most of them gay, by the way) or Big Money told them to ‘keep it low’, or both. Hence you have Scott Walker making a pretzel of himself on the issue and Cruz treating it as ‘just another issue’, rather than as the centerpiece of his campaign. Trump has neither the Republican ‘advisers’ (most of them gay, by the way) or Big Money...and therefore is free to address the concerns of the voters.

The Cheap Labor Express is crapping their pants that we might actually elect someone who might actualy shut them down.
They are desperate to stop Trump bcause he is not owned by them.
There are only a few others that are not owned by them.
We have one last chance to retain the rule of law and our country.
I hope we choose wisely.

“Why is it a candidate who echoes the sentiments of the conservative voters is labeled “populist” “

I, too, don’t appreciate the term. They’re basically calling us ‘idol worshipers’, and I don’t appreciate it.

I suspect that she’s just unable to understand that our love is NOT TRUMP, but his position on critical issues, which threaten to destroy this country if not stopped. Reagan was the same...the Dems back then had a HUGE PROBLEM understanding that the Soviets were the bad guys and we were the good guys. It could have been Bob Dole, for all cared...if the message is right, then we’re on board.

Excellent analogy. They still haven’t reached the point of acceptance. They still think it’s a flirtation.
