The mystery of the cloaked person in Gastonia has been solved. Two photos of a person wearing a cloak went viral after being posted on Facebook on Aug. 17. The pictures were allegedly taken by a spectator who spotted the man or woman outside Hudson Woods Apartments. Speculation grew through social media, and multiple news agencies reported the “creepy cloaked figure of Gastonia.” But the photos are no longer shrouded in mystery, according to Lance Calhoun with Southwood Realty. “It looks like we have a logical explanation for all of this,” he said. “It looks like some visiting college kids were working on a school project.” Initial alarm Management for Hudson Woods was contacted on Aug. 17. Someone reported a cloaked figure had dropped raw meat near a playground on the property. Calhoun said there was a call about some raw meat somewhere within the complex, but nothing was ever found. Residents and neighbors voiced concern, and property managers met with police. There was no evidence to prompt any further investigation, according to the police. Online explosion Since the initial call to police, people have voiced concern, but no one reported seeing the cloaked person again. “I haven’t heard of any other sightings. I’ve just heard of people being concerned,” said Donna Lahser of the Gastonia Police Department. News agencies from around the country soon picked up the story, although some used only Tweets and unrelated photos to tie the cloaked person to the raw meat. ‘Life of its own’ Calhoun and Lahser said they were both surprised by the online reaction to the story and photos. Once the student’s parent saw the overwhelming response, she called the leasing agent, Calhoun said. “She contacted the property and said it was her daughter working on something related to school,” he said. Officers have spent little time on the report, according to Lahser, because the only crime that would’ve been committed would have been littering. “It’s getting more credence than it needs to. It’s got a life of its own,” she said. But reports of suspicious people are taken seriously in any circumstance, according to Lahser. “We can talk to any suspicious person whether they’re wearing a cloak or not,” she said.
