Back up a little, cowboy. We are talking about making cars 35% more expensive. Which results in fewer cars being sold. Which throws a wet blanket on your “encourage-thing,” as it always does. Thus my comment about free lunches. There’s no such thing.

On the third hand, if we want to stem the tide of illegal immigration, Mexico needs to develop an economy that can provide jobs.

The CFR agrees with you. That's why they want open borders and a free flow of goods and labor, because at the end of the day, they're more interested in building the Mexican economy than our own.

I have a better idea though. How about we build a big freaking wall and let the Mexicans solve their own problems?

OR they can move back to the United States. OR I can just not buy Ford and instead buy American-made.

Let’s compare just how many factories moved to Mexico vs. Canada.

I’m guessing a lot in the first category, not so much in the second.

NAFTA was a great deal, but not for Canada and the US. Time to end the failed experiment.

And a sealed border + rigorous enforcement of existing laws will stop the illegal migrants. Other than that, it’s not our responsibility to solve Mexico’s problems.

OR they can move back to the United States.

Where they will be 34.5% more expensive? How could anyone miss this? Prosperity is right around the corner!

That is why he has his line of men’s ties made in China. Sure he can tax everything at 35% as an import from Mexico, but what a minute - Nabisco, Hershey Chocolates, Emerson Electronics, Philips Magnovox, Slyvania Lighting and multiple other American businesses have their products made in Mexico too. Than it becomes what it is Europe a VAT - a value added tax. So if you own a Volkswagen Beetle it comes from Mexico. Many of the pats for American care come from China, Taiwan, Japan and elsewhere in the world. The price of a car for the average Joe or Jane would be too pricey!

No we aren't and no it doesn't. Ford will just sell fewer cars but their loss will be another car companies gain, a car company who was not subjected to the 35% tax. It's the old carrot and stick. And thanks for calling me a cowboy. I like that.

OR we can lower taxes and make working in America a pretty nice experience exactly as Trump wants.

I think you might be preaching to the improper choir. Canada runs a trade surplus with the United States. That’s the Holy Grail on these threads, usually.

How about cars from Germany, Japan, and Canada? Will there be a 35% tax on those?

Again, you've discovered an inelastic demand curve for autos (!). Stunning.

Because you just know that if the government artificially forces Ford to raise its prices, Ford's competitors will keep their prices level out of the goodness of their own hearts.

But Ford must negotiate the move with the UAW first.

Negotiate concessions from the UAW first. Ford could move production somewhere else and then closed down the Wayne plant. Nothing prevents them from doing that. But if the UAW will give in in some areas and generate cost savings at Wayne then Ford will move production of another line there and save all those jobs.

What did you think they had to negotiate with the UAW over?

When Trump says Mexico is smarter than the US in negotiating trade he is correct. But it is not because Mexico out negotiated the US on NAFTA.

Mexico has more Free Trade Agreements than any other nation. Autos assembled in Mexico have access to 60% of the world market without any duty or tariff.

A $50,000 auto assembled in the US and exported to Europe has a $5000 duty on it(which is more than the labor cost). If it were assembled in Mexico and exported to Europe, no duty at all.

If you want to build a plant to supply autos to the US, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, Europe, etc, build it in Mexico.

BTW, Canada exports more autos to the US than any other nation.

So, lets say that Trump gets elected and becomes King Donald the Great, and starts taxing Fords made in Mexico. Mexico would take the US into arbitration. Mexico under NAFTA Chapter 20 would win sanctioned retaliation and be allowed to legally retaliate with tariffs on apples, corn, computers, etc.

Ford would have a winning claim under NAFTA Chapter 11.

You know I used to support this crap too but I grew up and pulled my head out of my ass because punishing business into doing what we want simply doesn’t work. While Reagan did use a very limited and targeted program of tariffs he didn’t target American companies building elsewhere.

Its a hard left idea that panders to democrats and their union friends.

Despite my disgust with particular companies getting tax breaks and incentives that others don’t get, it does show that lures do work better than whippings. I just don’t like the idea of one company getting breaks that other companies don’t get. Oddly enough, these same FReepers praising Trump are just fine with that brand of cronyism as long as it helps their state.

The contract is up. The UAW is in a position of strength, although it identified FCA as the strike-target this time around.

No, you just can't move production somewhere else . . . it doesn't work that way, if it pisses-off the UAW. Ford could do it, but I wouldn't recommend buying a Focus again, ever, if it happens.

Of course, NAFTA is the problem.

That's why we have to get out of that prison first.

The contract is up at all the manufacturing plants, not just Wayne.

They have in the past. Michigan is littered with closed auto plants. It's expensive to do so but Ford will do it if it makes fiscal sense.

Also NAFTA is not a treaty it is an agreement. The difference is like “shacking up” vrs being married. It’s fairly easy to get out of an agreement.

And now we've come full circle: Ford "may" want to move the production of the Focus and C-MAX to Mexico, and build a new Ford Ranger at Wayne. But it needs the permission of the UAW to do so.

You don't really follow this stuff, do you? It's ok if you say no.

Yeah, and that’s one of the problems I have with Trump. He doesn’t seem to grasp the whole structure of power thingy.

You mean the guy with a $10 billion dollar company and thousands of employees, 'doesn't seem to grasp the whole structure of power thingy'?

If you mean congress getting in his way, that's why a strong LEADER can change thingy, things.

Can you grasp that thingy?
