Ahmed Mohamed, 14, Builds Clock, Is Cuffed for Bomb Hoax, and Ends Up Invited to White House

A high school student in Texas whose hobby is inventing thought he had a great idea for a project: to build his own clock.

The effort landed him in handcuffs and juvenile detention on Monday, accused of making a hoax bomb.

The detention of Ahmed Mohamed, 14, a student at MacArthur High School in Irving, Tex., near Dallas, generated a national furor even after the police said on Wednesday that he would not be charged as questions arose about whether he was targeted because of his religion.

The episode even came to the attention of the nation’s top leaders, who deplored the treatment of the young man. “Cool clock, Ahmed,” President Obama said on Twitter. “Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.”

Mr. Obama’s staff went on to invite Ahmed to come to the White House for Astronomy Night, to be held Oct. 19, an event bringing together scientists, engineers, astronauts, teachers and students to spend an evening stargazing from the South Lawn. The president’s spokesman held out the encounter as a case study in unreasoned prejudice in an era when the country is fighting Islamic terrorism at home and in the Middle East. Shortly before a news conference Wednesday outside his home in Irving, Ahmed — still wearing the NASA shirt he wore when he was detained — waved to a thick crowd of reporters from the doorway as his family brought out pizzas and drinks for the media. Ahmed said he was considering transferring out of MacArthur High and had indeed accepted President Obama’s invitation

Some muslim kid builds a fake bomb and gets praise from ONP and an invite to the white house.
Some white kid chews a pop tart into the shape of a gun and gets expelled from school. That’s white privilege.

The school reporting him will be the greatest thing to happen in this kids life. IHe is going to be wined and dined. I am sure some tech company will guarantee to pay his college tuition.
Making out like a bandit.

The kid modified a 2”x 2”x 1” digital clock and made it fit into a 1’x 1’x 3” case. Yeah, he’s a genius.

Like I said, and your post confirms it: modern America is nuts and anti-initiative. You are a perfect example.

The fact that you don’t see the problem is sad.

The bottom line is the teacher that panicked was overreacting to a situation where a simple question to the kid's engineering teacher would have explained the situation adequately. The story that this kid is some sort of victim is equally over the top.

I have two views on this:

1) I taught electronics and engineering in high school and kids carried their projects all over the place particularly when they were done. They relished recognition for their achievement and their peers were very curious about the projects. BTW These projects particularly clocks and timers are available through many sources as kits.

I got many teacher complaints that the kids were disruptive showing off their projects to friends in other classes. I did have to ask the students to tone down their demonstrations because the other students were way more interested in them than the classroom topics other teachers were presenting. Mostly I was pleased that they were showing a marketable skill they learned.

2) At the same time, the victimization machine was on one hour notice and fully in gear by the end of the newsday. Cair and the media in general were on this too fast to be coincidental. It is plausible that this could be part of an effort in desensitizing the general population to a threat much like groups of middle easterners acting suspicious on airplanes then claiming victim status when passengers reacted.

Someone at a higher level, oh, say the local mosque, could be be directing the ruse and this student may have been an unwilling participant...or not.

What happened to “see something, say something”?

That's only if the culprits are tea-partiers, otherwise you're racist.

He ripped up an alarm clock and put it in a new larger case. He didn’t “build a clock”.

He didn't build that.

And here on FR there are bleeding heart liberals who think the kid is being discriminated against.

If freepers want to protect this kid - think carefully about who you trust when everything hits the fan. A lot of freepers have no clue.

“Builds clock” ... didn’t he just take a clock out of its case and put it in this case?

This doesn't look like your everyday clock:

Ok, so he puts this thing with all sorts of wires inside a metal box and puts a cable around the box rather than locking it because locking it (it had a built in lock) would "make it look like a bomb". IOW, he knew ahead of time it would look like a bomb. And that cable only added to the look so don't try to snow me with that lame explanation. It also had a beep loud enough that his English teacher heard it and she's the one who took it to the principal's office. He'd already been told by his science teacher to put it away and not show it around but instead, he takes it around school. I'd like to know what short of student he is but either way he knew it would cause an uproar especially right around 9/11.

Wonder if he used Nixie Tubes?

Maybe the kid was treated unfairly although personally I am aloof of mooselimbs until they can prove to me they are no threat. Still we need to adhere to the law here but I can understand the scrutiny he was put under. Even so, if it was White kid, or any kid born here in America and of Christian or Jewish heritage, I doubt Obummer would give him the key to the White Hut.

Is there any doubt about Obama and his loyalties? He’s a tool of the Muslim world and his “scorched earth” agenda continues. Most Americans are sick of his crap: case in point the flies that adorn his face at times. Biblical? I think so.

“I swear to God, from the comments on the threads about this kid’s electronics project, the average IQ of Freepers must be sub-85.”

Before you attack people as stupid take a look at the picture of the devise. A teacher might not know that it was a clock.

This was an obvious attempt by Obama and the media to portray Muslims as victims.

Your mindset is why the next Edison won’t be American—he’ll be Indian or Chinese.

Must not be many engineers on FR.

Sorry. You are still wrong. The kid showed no initiative. He was “anti-common sense. He came into school with something he claims was a science project, but was not.
He didn’t build a clock. He took one apart for the purpose of making a briefcase look like a bomb. The timer went off in the middle of class. At that point I am sure the teacher had had enough and decided that his little joke was going to be met with consequences.
No teacher in the world would have reported the kid if he came to class and immediately showed and explained just what his project was. He most likely
So please stop pretending to be protecting the intellectual curiosity of our youth.
They’re kids. They can and will be little bastards from time to time. They’re not angels.

I thought roostercogburn’s reply to you was quite even handed & polite. Why can’t you agree to disagree w/out being rude? Also I normally would think what they did was too harsh, but unfortunately the world we live in has made reasonable people paranoid. And for good reason. As long as we are targeted by Muslim terrorists people will be looked at w/ suspicion. Is it fair? Probably not, but many people now err on the side of caution simply for the sake of safety & survival.

It doesn’t say any of that in the article—you are improperly claiming to know the kid’s motives.

I can only presume you have no EE experience at all. You are helping to make FR look like a hangout for xenophobic illiterates.
