The only two viable potential replacements for John Boehner as speaker of the House say they back the Ohio Republican and will oppose any effort to remove him from power. But other high-ranking Republicans are testing the waters should the embattled speaker be forced out.

In a pair of statements to POLITICO, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Ways and Means Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) forcefully backed Boehner and called for an end to the intraparty warfare crippling the House Republican Conference as it faces a possible government shutdown on Oct. 1.

“I support John Boehner as speaker,” McCarthy told POLITICO in a statement.

“We should be spending all of our time and energy confronting this administration’s disastrous policies,” he added. “The intrigue and fighting amongst ourselves only makes it harder to get that done. It ought to stop immediately.”

“We should be spending all of our time and energy confronting this administration’s disastrous policies...”

But you and the "leadership" haven't spent any time confronting this administration, which is the entire point of the discussion.

Kevin McCarthy, you’re one of the ones the legendary Joe McCarthy was warning us about.

And Paul Ryan - stick it.

Yup. If Boehner and McCarthy really cared about the Party, they would step down.

Its all about them and not really about conservative principles.

The GOP is ill-equipped to fight Obama effectively with the squishes leading it.

So says POLITICO. Now there is a rock-solid, conservative organ wouldn't you say?

Ryan and McCarthy are proven beltway puppets. It says a lot that they spoke to POLITICO about this issue.

Allen West for Speaker of the House.

That doesn’t matter. There is nothing that says the Speaker actually has to be an elected member of the House. If the House Republicans wanted to make West the Speaker, they could.

Speaker of the House does not have to be a sitting member of the House or the Senate.

This is not really ‘News’. If the House Majority Leader & the Chairman of Ways & Means were to “oppose” the Speaker, THAT would be News. They owe their jobs to the Speaker and if they were to break then that would mean that the votes were already lined up for a replacement.

You do not have to be a House member to be elected Speaker of the House.

while that may be theoretically true, it is not going to happen any time soon

Allen West lost his seat and will not be speaker of the house
