Jeb leaves a vacuum. Who fills it?

If you were in Washington watching the Republican debate last night, you might have felt a small tilt in the floor, or heard the plates rattling gently in their cupboards.

That was the sound of the Republican establishment shifting its collective weight away from Jeb Bush — and inching a little bit closer to their best available alternative.

And no, it’s not Ben Carson or Carly Fiorina.

Not to overstate the crisis here, because one poll can change everything at this stage of a race, but the way I saw it, last night was another minor disaster for Bush. He seemed, yet again, oddly tentative and squirmy, the earnest student body president shoved aside by the boorish quarterback at the pep rally.

That performance probably didn’t do much to help Bush among the millions of Republicans who tuned in, especially in the early primary states. But make no mistake: His most important audience right now is the one that pushed him onto that stage in the first place.

Because if Bush has a natural base in the party, it’s the powerful assemblage of Washington Republicans — politicians, theorists, lobbyists and lawyers — who can be counted on to unify every four years around a known, governing candidate. That’s why he entered the race as the presumed favorite despite an eight-year absence from office. That’s why his Super-PAC rolled up more money than the cash-counters at Trump Taj Mahal.

The GOPEs met with her and cleared her as their person after they saw that Carson would not use his position to go after Trump.

They moved quickly to pump-up her brand. Softball press articles. A noticeable lack of leftist media attacks. I’m sure they will use their social media bots to try to pump up her hits on Facebook and Twitter to try to create a bandwagon effect like they tried with Carson.

It’s all about positioning her and giving her no flak from the press.

It’s almost pathetic to watch because it is so transparent.

It’s the reverse of the “conservative carousel” of 2012. This time the GOPe is having to cycle through candidates every couple of weeks.

Yeah she is so great, she would have voted for Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court, she said Islam was one of the greatest civilizations in history. She subscribes to a Marxist and Lenin ideology,so like Obama she talks in bumper sticker applause lines,do your homework,we don’t need another lunatic running the country

You probably haven’t watched her enough.

The people at HP certainly saw enough of her. A failed CEO in my opinion.

They’re trying to set up two “lanes” for the race to winnow down to:

1) the outsider lane, where they’ve pushed Carson, but now will also push Fiorina to try to peel off Trump support and get one of their two properties to win out over him.

2) the moderate/Establishment/”adult” lane, where they’ll take whomever of Jeb, Rubio or Kasich wins out. The more now they’re doubting Jeb, the more they want to position Rubio for that slot.

I gotta tell ya, I disagree. I thought that she was shrill, and her answers were canned. Christie got under her skin, and it showed - which is bad, IMO. A little give and take shouldn't do that.

Everyone else is saying the same as you, though. Makes me wonder what I missed. Or what I saw that everyone else didn't.

My opinion, Trump likely won - not because he did better than everyone else, but because he didn't screw up. Carson Lost. Kasich stepped in it with his "let's trust Iran to do the right thing" answer. Bush stepped in it with his "I wholeheartedly support gin confiscation so long as a "proper hearing" is held" answer. I'm amazed that neither of them haven't been nailed by conservatives for those statements.

Rest of the pack didn't distinguish themselves. Hopefully, a handful of candidates will get shaken out by this debate. I figure that there's at least a half dozen, who don't have a snowball's chance and will cut out before they do any damage to their political future.

Huckabee and Paul don't have a chance either, but I'd bet they stick around until the bitter end.

How can nothing that was never going to be anything create a vaccum when it disappears?

A vacuum?

ah hahahahahaha....

The 6% candidate doesn’t create a very big hole when he drops out.

The vacuum left by Jeb is akin to a room full of air following the removal of one (1) molecule of O2.

Her comment that American women heard Donald Trump loud and clear was brilliant. It put him down without directing it at him. She followed that with a smile and the audience gave her a BIG, positive reaction. That can’t have been programmed because she hinged it to one of his charges directed at another candidate. Very clever.

Her defense of LIFE and attack on the PP videos left the men and all their excuses and legislation in the dust. FGS, some of them have claimed to have been working on defunding for years. Well why haven’t they accomplished a thing?

Even my own governor, whom I admire very much, claims to have “defunded”. That is true, but he hasn’t done a complete job. Our state legislature is still working on a hodgepodge of Bills on the topic.

The only place where I would quibble with Carly in her defense of the PP videos is that she called the child a “foetus”. It’s a BABY.

I don’t even have time here to comment on her comments on foreign policy and the military. All right on target.

Kasich? is the GOP’e go to Jeb replacement?

ROFL!!!!

Kasiach did SO bad last night I honestly kept forgetting about him completely when talking about the debate.

Kasiach will drop to 0% in the polls after last night and will be out of the race pretty soon.

Christie didn’t do too bad last night but why does he keep bringing up New Jersey? He has become nearly synonymous with New Jersey, a state not always seen in a positive light in the rest of the country. Why not just say you’re a governor in a blue state and have been able to make progress despite the overwhelming headwinds against you? Why clutter up your message with constant references to the Garden State?

Kasich? I don’t think so. I thought he was in way over his head last night. If I were a member of the GOPe, I would be looking at Rubio or maybe Christie. Both of whom looked pretty decent last night. Christie had a couple of moments where he looked like the voice of reason. (Damn! That sounds almost oxymoronic)
