The US is "alarmed" after Vladimir Putin orders airstrikes without consulting other countries operating in the region.
Russia says it has started to bomb Islamic State targets in Syria.
The Russian defence ministry said a number of airstrikes had targeted vehicles and warehouses belonging to militants.
Russia has been strengthening its military presence in Syria, where it supports the government forces of President Bashar al Assad.
But it is unclear whether Russia intends to target all forces opposing Mr Assad - including US-backed rebels - or just extremists such as IS.
A US defence official said he did not believe initial Russian attacks carried out near Homs were against IS. France agreed based on "initial indications".

Something makes me think that the Russian pilots aren’t going to be concerned about limiting collateral damage and avoiding innocent casualties.
Actually disaster is too strong a word. I prefer ‘solution’.

The Russians have been saying for two weeks that they were going to go after “Obama’s Terrorists” in Syria.
Today, they attacked the US-Backed “Free Syrian Army” along a strategic highway that they have cut off.
Can't help but wonder if they won't all go elsewhere when Russia zaps them all, rather than try to figure out who the pro-US terrorists are.

Syria isn’t anything to us, and removing Assad would crumble Syria, what obuma, shillary and ilk were trying to do while in Benghazi...
So Russia goes in, topples Syria, who do they put in his place or does Russia gain that country also?
