Cancer-Stricken Goalie's Mom Wants Artificial Turf Answers
NBC ^ | 10-1-15 | Stephanie Gosk

University of Miami athlete Austen Everett died from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2012. Her mother said it was soon after that, as she found out about even more sick players, that she came to believe that artificial turf used on soccer fields was the culprit.

"I realized, 'Oh my God, the thing that she loved most probably killed her,'" June Leahy told NBC News. "And that was hard." Leahy says since her daughter's death, she still hasn't gotten enough answers — or action from lawmakers and regulators.

why is the idea that artificial turf contains carcinogens foolish? why not study it further to find out? not calling on bans or ripping up all soccer fields here... only more studies.

but to your question calling children who are sick and or injured idiots... hardly speaks well of our compassion for others

Re-read my post that got your panties in a knot...

I was making up a statement that the parents would potentially claim to sue...

Show me one peer reviewed study that backs up this mothers claim.

“why is the idea that artificial turf contains carcinogens foolish? why not study it further to find out?”

Because it’s not made with some exotic materials that we would need to study. It’s recycled rubber for pete’s sake.

“but to your question calling children who are sick and or injured idiots...”

Hogwash! I didn’t say one word about children. You falsely trying to put words in my mouth hardly speaks well for your honesty.

if you re-read my posts you would know that I am not claiming that astro turf causes cancer, only that it should be studied further as there have been no long term independent studies done of a reasonable sample size to say either way. The benefit of this would be knowing definitively one way or the other. The very reason the medical community can claim vaccines are safe is because studies have been done... so again why not do the studies?

NO parent concerned for their child’s welfare would call their child an idiot... that is your word and you and I both know it... Believe it or not there really are parents that care about the welfare of their children and are not out to sue everyone or even anyone.

Confusing the possible carcinogenic effects of artificial turf to concussion injuries doesn’t help clear things up either. On that issue we would probably agree. Concussion is a known risk for some sports, if you don’t want your child to have one, don’t have them play the sport. But if there are risks to playing on astroturf why not be informed about it and let parents make their own decisions? no lawyers needed.

boogieman... First... used car tires do contain known carcinogens..... they are not just pure rubber from a rubber tree.

Second, my post regarding the term idiot wasn’t meant for you, it was in reply to a different poster...re-read the thread

In fact, you’d be inhaling more “tire dust” just driving on the road or living near a busy one. Tires gradually wear out by being burned off from frictional forces. The resulting “dust” does go somewhere.

Vapors and dust are two different things.

My apologies to you, I am posting to two different people on this thread and I confused you with someone else... while we disagree my post regarding idiots was not for you and again I apologize...seemed I needed to re-read myself.

Most of what disappears from tires as they wear is particulate:

Turf burns are nasty, and readily infected. At least that is how it was when I was in college. We played intramural football in long sleeves and long pants to keep from getting ground up on the turf.

A whole town got cancer, and no one survived.
A truck was found leaking by the roadside . . .
