Iowa GOP chairman: Caucus will come down to the wire (Trump leads, Cruz now up to 3rd place!)

The chairman of the Iowa Republican Party says the Hawkeye State’s GOP presidential caucus is still up for grabs, predicting the race will be a “nail-biter.”

“The people are waiting to make up their minds,” Jeff Kaufmann told host John Catsimatidis on AM 970 New York on Sunday.

“I don’t think we’re going to have polls that are predictable of the end of this thing, this caucus season in Iowa,” he added.

“We’re going to be well into January before this thing starts flushing out to the point where you can even start talking about the top five and the bottom five.”

Kaufmann said Iowans are very divided over polarizing GOP front-runner Donald Trump.

“I am still hearing the buzz about Donald Trump,” he said. “I hear people with strong opinions about him, both the positives and the negatives. I certainly have not seen any indication yet that the negative opinions that I’m hearing are outnumbering the positive opinions that I’m hearing.”

Although the GOP chairman maintained that Trump is still the favorite, he said several campaigns are beginning to gain momentum.

“I’m sensing some momentum in the Rubio campaign, in the Christie campaign, in the Bush campaign,” Kauffman said. “I’m sensing some on the ground movement for Bobby Jindal out here.”

Trump leads the race for the first-in-the-nation caucus with 24.8 percent support, according to a RealClearPolitics average of polls.

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson places second with 19.3 percent, followed by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) with 9.5 percent.

After them are businesswoman Carly Fiorina with 8 percent, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) with 7 percent, and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush with 5.5 percent.

Didn't John Ellis' father actually beat then former Gov. Reagan there in 1980?

Yeah right, in your dreams! By January there will only be five of anything, if even that many. BTW, I think I had a “Catsimatidis” on my butt cheek some time back!

Winning Iowa is often a kiss of death.

The leader going in seldom wins and the winner seldom gets the nomination.

Not always, though. See Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama, among others. Huckleberry and Sweater Vest didn’t have the money in the bank to use the momentum.

Nobody gives a movement what you "sense".

Trump isn’t running ads anywhere but Instagram so far, right?

I doubt Iowa or any of the other early states are going to be that close unless the RNC starts cheating openly...again.

Trump gets about $20 million dollars of free publicity on a bad day, why should he pay for advertising?

With that much manure, you ought to grow organic carrots.

Romney was originally and incorrectly called the winner in 2012, robbing “Sweater Vest” of any momentum.

Yep, and the insiders need to be watched like a hawk if Trump or Cruz win the caucus. Can’t let them steal it like they did from Santo.

Was there a point in there? If so it was lost on me.
