The American debate over gun control has been stalemated for some time. Back in the 1990s, Congress was able to pass legislation requiring federal background checks on most gun purchasers and outlawing "assault weapons." But in this century, each mass shooting sparks a brief discussion of measures that might be helpful in preventing the next one — and the discussion ends with nothing being done.
Maybe last week's attack at an Oregon community college by a man who killed nine people and wounded nine others will finally break the impasse. It is past time to make guns less accessible to people who clearly shouldn't be trusted with them. But if lawmakers refuse to take the needed action, the president has options to address the problem without them.
Those convicted or charged with felonies, drug users, unauthorized foreigners and those who have been committed to mental institutions are barred from buying guns. The background check system serves to flag them if they make an attempt. But they can easily get around the ban by dealing with private sellers, who are not required to run background checks.

Ban guns from liberals and the vast majority of the problem has been solved.
Make it illegal for liberals to own guns. Arrest and prosecute any lib with a gun. That ends the supply to criminals. And stops them from shooting up schools.
Why people do not show a breakdown of liberal vs conservative gun crime I will never know because liberals account for almost 100% of it.

The mother of the murdering SOB apparently bought the guns for him. Already illegal. More laws will certainly prevent this.
It’s even better. In the last reported year about 730 people were killed with rifles of all kinds, including “assault rifles,” while a bit over 1,000 were killed by other people using only their hands, feet, and other body parts. So much for the “unarmed black teenager” crap.
Soon they will propose a ‘foreground’ check.
You must be vetted, and approved as a responsible gun owner, with a purpose for owning a gun (and gun desired must match that purpose).
May require a psych and physical check. A gender check (no masculinity allowed). An education check (BA degrees in socialism only), a voter registration check, a geographical check (no one within say about 50 miles of a gun-free zone).
Prove the negative. No time limit on the check. Costs borne by purchaser. Repeat for each gun, repeat every year for every gun.

As I recall, decades ago didn’t Chicago have some problems when Congress passed a law making it illegal to drink alcohol? Didn’t I read that Chicago passed a gun control bill recently, but there were over 60 gun shot victims and 12 murders last week in Chicago? Didn’t I read where Prohibition really didn’t stop people from drinking, but made a lot of bad people really rich? Didn’t I read where half-ass laws like this never work, but simply drive the market underground where bad people thrive? Didn’t I read that Liberals have the IQ of dust?

All of the ideas that President Obama has proposed for more gun control are already in effect in Oregon. Think about that.

That law was so easy to get around it was pitiful. You could go to any gun show and find 30 round magazines “For Law Enforcement Only” for sale to the great unwashed for maybe a few dollars more than a pre-ban magazine.
Bayonet lugs were ground off due to the epidemic of bayonetings (giggle) before he ban, the flash hider holes filled. Some rifle stocks were converted to Thumbhole stocks.
The whole law was an enormous joke.
It reminded me of when the game of nine pins were banned. The gamers SIMPLY added one more pin and called it BOWLING.
