Global law enforcement agencies have arrested a gang member behind the theft of £20 million ($30.7 million) via a piece of malicious software that records banking details, and are on the hunt for the remaining members.

The malware – known as Dridex – is believed to be developed by in eastern Europe and it's able to harvest bank details online in order to steal money from people. Global financial institutions and a variety of different payment systems have been targeted, the U.K.'s National Crime Agency (NCA), one of the authorities involved, said on Tuesday.

"Thousands" of Brits have been infected by Dridex, according to the NCA. Hackers send documents containing the malware and when users click on the link, the malicious code is downloaded into their computers. The NCA said mainly users if Microsoft's Windows operating system were affected.

Dridex does not only affect U.K. users and experts estimate it is responsible for $100 million losses worldwide.

This stops when you make an example, find them, prosecute them and firing squad

That’s my feeling exactly. Hackers should be executed.

“This stops when you make an example, find them, prosecute them and firing squad”

With the collapse of the old KGB cyber unit became the largest organized computer crime group in the world. A couple of years ago they shut down entirely for about two weeks. When they came back online they had relocated to a building beside Chinese State Security in Beijing. One of their biggest income sources is supplying cyber crime software to purchasers on the Dark Net. Then script bunnies instantly have the tools to perform thefts that would ordinarily take the resources of something like the NSA to accomplish.

It’s a situation similar to trying to take down a drug cartel. The people we can get are the cyber equivalent of the street dealer.

Great minds think alike. I have long called for the summary execution of hackers responsible for financial crimes like this, AND for the distribution of child pornography.

Kill the sons o’ b*tches.

Why don’t they rig an account so that the owner can ONLY GET THEIR FUNDS in a personal visit to the bank? NO ‘electronic’ withdrawals.

Why don’t they have an ATM code that you can enter that gives a BS response like “INSUFFICIENT FUNDS, or CREDIT TERMINATED”—because the code actually means “HELP I’m being robbed at the ATM”. AND call the cops while at it?

Great ideas. I like the secret codes thing. Too much trouble for ‘them’.
We also have to use our SS # like it’s no big deal. Pisses me off.

And how about a simple change on all pages of checking statements?

PUT THE LAST FOUR NUMBERS OF THE ACCOUNT ONLY, NOT THE WHOLE DAMN THING!

All credit card statements, too!

Not all hackers are bad. There are the good hackers who track the bad ones down.

I have no problem with the hackers who steal and invade privacy being executed though.

The really good ones end up working for the government.

“The really good ones end up working for the government. “

Some of which are just as evil as the ones pillaging the interwebs.

Yep. Our government will use black hats when they can catch them. No one thinks such talent goes un tapped. These hackers don’t just sit in prison doing nothing.

This stops when you find them and then firing squad. Prosecute them posthumously.

Maybe after quite a few executions of Wall Street bankers. They make these hackers look like pikers in comparison. They’ve gotten away with trillions.

An associate of my husband just told him that he signed up for some security service that was supposed to protect him from identity theft and hacking. The company turned out ob be located in Pakistan and was cleaning out his bank accounts.

We are in the middle of refinancing and have been getting weird request letters for additional information along with the request to follow the loan process on line, instead of in person. When I called the number on one of the letters, the bank said that they didn’t send the letter.

I called Lifelock and informed them of the issue and they told me not to do anything on line with the loan and not to even mail any of the documents, to take them in in person.
