Semper Fidelis - SPECIAL OPS JOSHUA WHEELER: Soldier Killed in Iraq During Rescue Mission Identified

"As the compound was being stormed, the plan was not for the U.S. ... forces to enter the compound or be involved in the firefight," Carter said. "However, when a firefight ensued, this American did what I'm very proud that Americans do in that situation, and he ran to the sound of the guns and he stood up. All the indications are that it was his actions and that of one of his teammates that protected those who were involved in breaching the compound and made the mission a success."

"That is an inherent risk that we ask people to assume," Carter added. "Again, it wasn't part of the plan, but it was something that he did, and I'm immensely proud that he did that."

The raid targeted a prison near the town of Hawija and was undertaken at the request of the Kurdish Regional Government, the semi-autonomous body that governs the Kurdish region of northern Iraq.

Of course he is a better man than and God bless his family.

But why all of a sudden are CBS, NBC, ABC showing up on FR about this story?

Not blaming posters at all!!!

they’re reporting it and we’re given the links.

But when was the LAST TIME any of those stations were on here regarding a conservative issue where they were on the right side.

All of a @#$@$#ing sudden, they’re so patriotic because obummer needs cover for Russia’s embarrassing him and hitlery needs cover for the questioning.

The man who died is 10 times the man obummer will ever be.

And hillary laughs about 4 dead Americans.

Just a hair split but Semper Fidelis is the US Marine motto. MSgt. Wheeler was Army.

Men like MSGT. Wheeler deserve a far better Commander in Chief than Obama.

It’s true.

We’ve (or at least I’ve) died a few times throughout life from making the wrong decision based on fear.

This Man had a choice to stay put, run the other way, or run towards incredible danger.

God bless him.

What will hurt the most is when obummer uses this Soldier for propaganda purposes, when in truth, he doesn’t care at all.

As a former Marine, I can assure you that Semper Fidelis is the Marine Corps motto and is not associated in any way, shape or form with the United States Army.

Having said that, my condolences and respect to the family of MSgt Wheeler. He served his country with honor and great distinction.

Your picture really touched my heart when I saw the Helmet on the Soldier in the photo...

My Grandfather served in WW1, he enlisted and spent all his time in Europe in trenches.

If you have seen the movie Legends of the Fall where the youngest one goes on a recon with another soldier marking the emplacements on a map... The map guy gets killed and the young one is blinded by gas, probably Mustard...

That was my Grandfathers job in the Military, he was a Cartographer and responsible for tracking all emplacements and other strategic elements for which he was responsible. If he made mistakes, many men died...He was mustard gassed in a similar incident and lost his hair and had PTSD for which he used alcohol, but he was not a drunk

He told us a story of life in the trench with the Scotsman and their Pipes and Kilts... The water would get so deep that the Scots looked like Lily Pads as their kilts floated on the waist deep water...

It really came home to me in a book store in Texas where I happened upon a book about Trench Warfare with lots of pictures. Body parts and other devastation were daily fare, the horrors that he saw we never experienced as anger or anything to give us a clue what he had gone through..

Had God not watched over him, I would not be here today...

We are free because of the risk of life and limb of great men the likes of Master Sgt. Wheeler and brave heroes like your Grandfather. They share a bond in history no man can understand outside of the courage of combat.

Thank you so much for your story.

A Consecration

NOT of the princes and prelates with periwigged charioteers Riding triumphantly laurelled to lap the fat of the years,— Rather the scorned—the rejected—the men hemmed in with the spears;

The men of the tattered battalion which fights till it dies, Dazed with the dust of the battle, the din and the cries. The men with the broken heads and the blood running into their eyes.

Not the be-medalled Commander, beloved of the throne, Riding cock-horse to parade when the bugles are blown, But the lads who carried the koppie and cannot be known.

Not the ruler for me, but the ranker, the tramp of the "road, The slave with the sack on his shoulders pricked on with the goad, The man with too weighty a burden, too weary a load.

The sailor, the stoker of steamers, the man with the clout, The chantyman bent at the halliards putting a tune to the shout, The drowsy man at the wheel and the tired look-out.

Others may sing of the wine and the wealth and the mirth, The portly presence of potentates goodly in girth;— Mine be the dirt and the dross, the dust and scum of the earth!

Theirs be the music, the colour, the glory, the gold; Mine be a handful of ashes, a mouthful of mould. Of the maimed, of the halt and the blind in the rain and the cold— Of these shall my songs be fashioned, my tales be told.

~John Masefield.
