Former U.S. Senator and actor Fred Thompson has died at the age of 73, after a recurrence of lymphoma, according to a statement from his family.
Thompson, who served eight years as a U.S. Senator for Tennessee, was also a GOP presidential candidate, an attorney during President Nixon's Watergate scandal and an accomplished actor.
"Very few people can light up the room the way Fred Thompson did," Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander said in a statement. "He used his magic as a lawyer, actor, Watergate counsel, and United States senator to become one of our country's most principled and effective public servants. He was my friend for nearly fifty years. I will miss him greatly. Honey and I and our entire family send our love and sympathy to Jeri and the Thompson family."

Sad news. I had dreams of President Thompson back in the day, too.
Thompson was a class act. And being a “Law & Order” junkie, I loved him as the DA Arthur Branch. Had a great second career as an actor.
May God rest his soul and give comfort to his loved ones.

Shame, I rather liked the fellow
Prayers up for the family. RIP, Fred.
R.I.P. Fred.
I forgot about that. LOL Great line. Thompson could play tough authoritative figures well, with a sprinkle of folksiness.
He always struck me as tough and resolute in real life as well as on-screen. Amazing to think he ran for president in 2008... those who interviewed him were impressed by his travel without staff members in tow. One can only imagine how different things could’ve been.
RIP Sen. Thompson. You will be missed.
his campaign accepted my contribution on Sunday and he resigned the next day on Monday
Mene Mene Tekel to all the rest such as leftists, the Godless, liberals and muslims and anyone else who reject God and His teachings.
Great guy, but I wish he had not done those reverse mortgage commercials. That dropped his rating in my book.
Rest In Peace Fred.
I sent Fred a contribution when he was running for the presidency.
Somehow, his campaign group got my name and my wife’s name mixed into a curious highbred.
I still get mail from the RNC using this mixed up name.
He looked a lot older than 73.
Wow, and he was just on my TV Friday trying to sell me a reverse mortgage.
RIP.
Oddly he still had a conservative political statement or two make the meme rounds every month on Facebook. I think he got more conservative towards the end.
He had been fighting cancer for years.
Me too. I still have my Fred ball cap and plastic tumblers.
