Maryland scraps gun "fingerprint" database after 15 failed years (another failed leftist program)

Millions of dollars later, Maryland has officially decided that its 15-year effort to store and catalog the "fingerprints" of thousands of handguns was a failure.

Since 2000, the state required that gun manufacturers fire every handgun to be sold here and send the spent bullet casing to authorities. The idea was to build a database of "ballistic fingerprints" to help solve future crimes.

But the system — plagued by technological problems — never solved a single case. Now the hundreds of thousands of accumulated casings could be sold for scrap.

"Obviously, I'm disappointed," said former Gov. Parris N. Glendening, a Democrat whose administration pushed for the database to fulfill a campaign promise. "It's a little unfortunate, in that logic and common sense suggest that it would be a good crime-fighting tool."

I like how he claims “logic and common sense” suggest it would be a crime fighting tool.
It, at best, is an after the fact forensic tool that is easily defeated by usage wear on the “fingerprinted” parts.
It does not “fight crime” in any fashion.

The US equivalent to the Canadian registration scheme that cost lots of money and never solved a thing. On top of that, it cost some politicians a lot of good will by pissing off their law-abiding voters for heaping another administrative burden on them.

A screwdriver down the barrel defeats this.

So does regular use to the point where 20,000+ rounds are fired down the barrel.

To: Red in Blue PA; All

But our intent was so good. And the idea was still valid, we just didn’t have enough money to do it right.

A screwdriver down the barrel defeats this.

So does buying a new barrel and bolt for cash at a gun show. But the screwdriver is cheaper.

I don’t know what the program is here in CA, but all new handguns are delivered with a spent case in an envelope. I assume another sits in some gov’t warehouse.

I just bout a new S&W here a few weeks ago and it too has the spent case.

Liberals solve problems by designing a special fantasy world wherein the problem will disappear and everyone will live happily thereafter. When the facts make it apparent that the problem has not been solved, they are not fazed at all. A new fantasy world can be fabricated that will do the trick. The dysfunctional society that we see today is a function of years of these irrational solutions.

Another good move on the part of our new GOP Gov. Hogan. Now he needs to work on repealing the draconian gun laws in general.

Disappointed? $5 Million spent and not a single case solved with this? People who pushed for this should go on trial for misleading the public.

That's what would happen with a private company.

And when you consider that the upper 99th plus percentile will never end up in the hands of a criminal, because criminals do not often buy and register guns from dealers, There is even less sense still.

You could hire one extra cop at 50K a year and have far more gun crimes solved than Zero

True — and it was just for long-guns (handguns are so regulated that, for the most part, only cops and criminals carry them). The cost was an issue — but, the insult to law-abiding gun (i.e. rifle and shotgun) owners was worse. We were all assumed to be criminals. The registry was put in to placate urban coffee-shop loiterers, who knew absolutely nothing about the subject — but, figured that they were smarter than knuckle-dragging rural hunters. Just one more example of leftist fascism.

Thank you.

"It's a little unfortunate, in that logic and common sense suggest that it would be a good crime-fighting tool."

What's up with Merryland Liberals these days?

They only tried this program for 15 years and it didn't solve a single crime?

Why don't they just hire several more layers of state bureaucrats and simply try harder - or at least pass some more laws on the subject? Have they lost their ever-luvin' minds!!??

“ ”It’s a little unfortunate, in that logic and common sense suggest that it would be a good crime-fighting tool.”

And he says this AFTER its a proven failure. After all these years and millions of dollars wasted on it, not a single crime has been prevented or solved because of it and he STILL insists “logic and common sense” suggest it would be a good crime fighting tool!

Liberalism is indeed a mental disorder.

...logic and common sense suggest that it would be a good crime-fighting tool

Just as 'effective' would have been to ask the criminals to take selfies as they're committing their crimes, and then send those photos to law enforcement. Then, criminalize the failure of not taking and sending those selfies.
