Univision Censors Cruz in GOP Debate Coverage

It is no secret that U.S. immigration policy is central to Univision’s existence. We have previously showcased video of Jorge Ramos openly admitting as much. This byline has also memorialized efforts to vitiate, suppress, or deceptively edit those Hispanic conservatives who refuse to toe the network’s line on policy (of which immigration is merely the first item).

The result of the network’s institutional culture is a narrative collision that resulted in the total censorship of U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) from news coverage of the immigration portion of last night’s GOP debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Univision’s late night newscast, Edición Nocturna, covered the immigration question by showcasing the exchange between businessman Donald Trump and Gov. John Kasich (R-OH) - in which Trump affirms his positions, and Kasich pushed back with his pro-amnesty point of view (it should be noted that the responses of both candidates were not interpreted accurately into Spanish, but were instead summarized and then overdubbed - an ongoing practice at the network).

ILIA CALDERON, ANCHOR: The immigration subject heated the Republican debate. Donald Trump said he was pleased with the appellate court ruling and added that it is necessary to remove eleven and a half million undocumenteds from the country. Responses by both Ohio Gov. John Kasich and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush were equally as aggressive. Luis Megid is in Wisconsin and has the highlights. Good evening, Luis.

LUIS MEGID, REPORTER: Good evening, Ilia. The fourth Republican debate has ended here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The topic was about the economy, but they inevitably spoke about immigration. Specifically, they spoke about the (5th Circuit of Appeals) court’s ruling and the executive action (DAPA/DACA). All of the primary candidates agree with the court’s decisión, but this is what Donald Trump said:

DONALD TRUMP: It was an unbelievable moment because the courts have not ruled in our favor. It was a 2-1 decisión - it is phenomenal that it happened. And I’d like to say that this is a country of laws.  We will have a wall, it will be built successfully. Believe me.

LUIS MEGID: After promising once again to build the border wall, Donald Trump said that all the undocumenteds had to be deported - and it was then that John Kasich interrupted him. This is what he said:

JOHN KASICH: Think about the families.Think about the children. You know the answer - if they’ve been respectful of the law, if they’ve paid the fines, they may stay. Let’s protect the border so that whoever might enter (illegally) can return, but we can not remove eleven and a half million people. We can not grab them and put them on the other side of the border. That’s a silly argument.

LUIS MEGID: This is it from Milwaukee, back to you, Enrique.

Correspondent Luis Megid does a quick wrap and toss back to co-anchor Enrique Acevedo - with no mention whatsoever of Sen. Ted Cruz or of his response on the subject, which many believe to have won him the debate.

Except that this wasn’t how the exchange actually went down. Univision summarized the exchange to make it seem like Kasich had the last word (which we know is false), and what’s worse, butchered the interpretation of the exchange into Spanish.

Univision’s viewers are entitled to hear, at minimum, a proper representation of the exchange - and to a full disclosure if anything was summarized or paraphrased. But dubbing the summary over the English-language speaker is a gross dereliction of ethics. (click here for a full English-language transcript and comparison).

And then there’s Ted Cruz. Univision’s viewers heard not a peep of this:

Sen. Ted Cruz: And, you know, I understand that when the mainstream media covers immigration, it doesn’t often see it as an economic issue. But, I can tell you for millions of Americans at home watching this, it is a very personal economic issue. And, I will say the politics of it will be very, very different if a bunch of lawyers or bankers were crossing the Río Grande. Or if a bunch of people with journalism degrees were coming over and driving down the wages in the press. Then, we would see stories about the economic calamity that is befalling our nation. And, I will say for those of us who believe people ought to come to this country legally, and we should enforce the law, we’re tired of being told it’s anti-immigrant. It’s offensive. I am the son of an immigrant who came legally from Cuba to seek the American dream. And, we can embrace legal immigration while believing in the rule of law. And I would note: try going illegally to another country. Try going to China, or Japan. Try going to Mexico. See what they do. Every sovereign nation secures its borders, and it is not compassionate to say we’re not going to enforce the laws, and we’re going to drive down the wages for millions of hardworking men and women. That is abandoning the working…

Cruz’ pushback against Univision’s odious “anti-immigrant” narrative was one of the highlights of the evening, but went completely unreported. No one should be surprised by Univision’s thoroughgoing commitment to only one side of the immigration story at this point - but it is eye-opening to see the lengths to which the network regularly goes in order to suppress, silence and essentially demonize opposing arguments.

This isn’t a surprise. Illegals are part of the entitlement brigade and Cruz speaks out about it.

Just like the state run media, they lie by omission.
