During a town hall Thursday evening in Iowa, Donald Trump told voters the "only way" to make college more affordable for low-income students is "to start some governmental program."
The Republican presidential hopeful was asked what measures he would take, as president, to ensure middle-to-low income Americans are able to "pay their tuition [and] afford books while they're going to school."
"Well the only way you can do it is you have to start some governmental program and you have governmental programs right now," Trump told the moderator during the forum, which was held at a local community college.
"They go, and they work, and they take loans, and they're borrowed up, and they can't breathe, and they get through college and the worst thing is, they go through that whole process and they don't have any job," the billionaire said, referring to the majority of undergraduates enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities.
He continued, "You know the one program that the U.S. makes a whole lot of money with is student loans, and that's maybe the one program they shouldn't be making money with."
"So we're going to have to start a program," he said. "We're going to do something very big with loans because you have to get these people going. They really feel down and out."
Pressed on what he would do to solve the burgeoning student debt crisis, Trump said, "we're going to do refinancing for people who have loans who literally can't do anything."
"We're going to do refinancing and extensions," he said. Both of Trump's leading Democratic opponents, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, have proposed refinancing existing student loans.
Last June, Senate Republicans blocked a vote on legislation sponsored by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., that would have...

I agree we need a government program. Start axing colleges which create liberal Demonrats and start using the internet to replace liberal college professors.
Just have videos of the lectures from top experts and cut college costs by 90%.
The last bad example American youth need from a Republican Administration is “a new government program”—the very last!
That’s not what he said. Gabby Morrongiello is a liberal. RW, how’s your boy Jeb doing?
- Typical Trump supporter.
Interesting title as opposed to what he said.
HELL NO!!!
Yet more gibsmedat is the last thing we need.
Get yer head outa yer ass, Donald!
Interesting that you picked that quote when he also said this:
“Well the only way you can do it is you have to start some governmental program and you have governmental programs right now,” Trump told the moderator during the forum, which was held at a local community college.
You didn’t even read this.
It’s funny, I watched that town hall meeting. My take from what he was telling the students was that he was going to make jobs. That when they graduated they would be able to find jobs.
One of my professors at our community college told me....”You wouldn’t believe what they pay me”....and he didn’t mean too little.
People don’t read it. They just look at the headline. LOL
I agree on one part...
The government should not be ‘ for profit ‘ in any regard.
Student loans is just one example.
Another would be the Army Corps of Engineers, which is a government fee for service organization, yet they also claim regulatory powers.
Some ideas:
1. Cut the percentage of administrators down to 1970s levels. Especially those with “diversity” in their title. Note: this would also mean cutting Federal regulations and guidance.
2. Close and consolidate failing colleges at the State level.
3. Discourage colleges that build too much or spend too much on student perks.
4. Make sure faculty teach at least two classes per semester (preferably, at least three).
5. Get rid of majors where students graduate with debt, but not jobs. This would flush all the race & gender studies majors.
6. Get rid of tenure for professors.
Sadly, none of the above will happen without an apocalypse.
Donald showing his conservatism. /s/
Donald Trump, just dripping with conservatism.
There are several quotes.
Did you? Are you defending Elizabeth Warren’s, Hillary’s, and Bernie’s plan for college loans?
He (and every other candidate) needs to find out why college costs more than a house. Something’s wrong and I bet it has something to do with democrats.
And that he would make all of my wildest dreams come true. I didn’t watch the town hall meeting, but I heard him say he would make John Bolton the secratary of state, and Allen West the secratary of defense, and Ted Cruz supreme court justice.
