Feds to states: No, you cannot ban Syrian refugees

More than half of the nation's governors say they will not accept Syrian refugees in their states, but they may have little choice.

States cannot pick and choose which refugees to take in, federal officials with the Health and Human Services Department's Office of Refugee Resettlement warned in a letter sent out last week. If they deny services to any group of refugees, states may risk losing resettlement funding altogether.

"States that continue to use ORR funding must ensure that assistance and services are delivered without regard to race, religion, nationality, sex, or political opinion," ORR Director Robert Carey wrote. "States may not deny ORR-funded benefits and services to refugees based on a refugee's country of origin or religious affiliation."

The letter, dated Nov. 25, was sent out last week to refugee resettlement programs in 49 states and the District. Wyoming does not have a resettlement program.

Thirty state governors have promised to block Syrian refugees from settling within their borders since Islamic terrorists attacked Paris on Nov. 13. Opponents of taking in the refugees cite fears that the federal government's screening process may fail to weed out extremists, a concern the HHS letter addresses.

"Syrian refugees are subject to even more precautions than other refugees," the letter notes. "It is the most robust screening process for any category of individuals seeking admissions into the United States."

Stand your ground governors. Make Barry use force and it will turn around on him.

Let the Feds keep their resettlement money. Evict any and all refugees from the State if the Governor or elected officials are so inclined, and send them to DC.

What allows the Fed to force the states to comply?

“If they deny services to any group of refugees, states may risk losing resettlement funding altogether.”

“If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor”?

If its muslims shooting up that school, Barry and Moonbeam will soon demand that conservatives’ guns must be confiscated.

The federal government is presently Wonderland with Barack playing the part of the Jabberwock. It’s just craziness to say, “If you won’t participate, we won’t pay you to participate.”
OK then, go boil your bottoms you silly feral person.

Remember who we are dealing with here: The same kind of people who use phrases like “Affordable care act” “climate change” “Microaggression”. Phrases that read one way, but mean a completely different thing when you look through them. “Syrian refugees” for example IS in fact “Importing ISIS”. When you got the UN, the liberal UN conceding that 70% of these “refugees” are men and that 10 to 30% of them could be radicalized, then bottom line it’s “importing ISIS”. That’s what is really going on here.

Who should the National Guard listen to?

More guns...this is nothing more than a raw power grab. I say let them play their hand. It will go over very poorly.

All or most of the governors will give in. That is if they haven;t already. Dictator Obama can bluster all he wants, but if there ever is a stand off it will be up to the courts.

Wonder what happens if the states decide to refuse to comply, and reject federal ORR monies?

States can’t keep out Syrian foreigners because the federal laws preempt the states.

But federal laws can be ignored and the states allowed to keep Mexican foreigners.

Somebody please explain that.

Can't patrol your borders, can't keep out "refugees..."

This is the federal leviathan the Founders warned us about.

The States created the Federal Government.

A good first test for Paul Ryan.

He needs to rally Congress & get this solved. There is nothing in the Constitution that says we have to take any of these ‘refugees’ (wolves in sheeps clothing)—and the Feds DO NOT have this kind authority over the states.

States control the state National Guard. ONLY a Governor can call them up for anything.

Actually, yes - that is even IN THE US CODE. President can’t call up the NG without the governours doing it for him.

RE: States control the state National Guard. ONLY a Governor can call them up for anything.

The reason why I ask is this — I can conceive of a DEFIANT governor who will call the State’s National Guard to stand in the way of refugees being repatriated to their state.

This act could pave the way for a constitutional crisis.

State rights vs the Fed.

Who wins is anybody’s guess.
