Senate closes in on Obamacare repeal: Here’s how it works

WASHINGTON (MEDIA GENERAL) - Five years after Obamacare became federal law, the U.S. Senate is on track to pass a major repeal this week, following dozens of previous attempts in the House.

**SNIP**

To achieve that, Thune and other conservative leaders will give the Affordable Care Act its biggest gut punch to date - an official repeal vote.

In a twist of legislative fate, GOP Senate leaders will pass their Obamacare repeal package through reconciliation, the same technical procedure Democrats used to pass it in 2010.

Reconciliation is a parliamentary maneuver only allowed on budget-related bills. It's a useful tool for the majority party when it comes to eking out narrow victories on contentious issues, since reconciliation guidelines eliminate filibusters and require a modest 51-vote majority for approval.

Reconciliation also allows an unlimited number of amendments. But there's a catch - each amendment must be budget-related as well.

Less paperwork will also help fight global warming.

It will pay for conservatives to be rational about Obamacare and let it settle out with all its outrage and crony capitalism, because it really was a gift horse for the insurance companies.

We need something that makes healthcare affordable for all Americans.....and forget the special interests who rape us in the process. When my son was born I could pay for it myself. Today one needs a mortgage to cover it, and most who participate and benefit except he or I would get a huge cut of the action but do nothing to provide health care.

I still see insurance cos. as a huge part of the problem

A gift horse to insurance companies....who are losing millions of dollars because of the ACA and pulling out?

If you want to find out why the cost of giving birth has gone up so much look at the ambulance chasers that sue hospitals for millions of dollars. One famous one named Edwards channeled the unborn child in court with a sideshow act that made him tens of millions of dollars.

How is creating a huge layer of federal bureaucrats & administrators to oversee the Affordable Care act, all with good pay (and all thinking, “I could make a lot more in the private sphere ..” but none quitting) and gold plated benefits, and a metastasized IRS as enforcer, so they can eat-out every penny of the substance of those of us who are actually paying into the system, rather than being subsidized like the gibmedats, how in the world does that “pay for conservatives”?

I prefer to pay for my own healthcare, and take the insurance company overhead totally out of the picture.

The only thing they do is add costs and decrease control by the patient/customer and of the physicians. The insurance companies are nothing but sap sucking intermediaries that pay their CEOs many times what they are worth while adding enormous costs.

No thanks. If we paid it ourselves the costs would come down enormously.

People I will just say there are a (lot) of people who see Obamacare as a step forward. A lot of people who did not have coverage before, and a lot of people who have conditions which were exempted from coverage previously.

Sure adjust it. But don’t just repeal it.

Nope. Fix it.

You forgot a sarc tag there buddy.

You don't ‘fix’ the most egregious piece of un-American, unconstitutional ‘legislation’ every passed. Nothing about Obamacare was legal. It needs to be scrapped wholesale and then we need to figure out how the government messed this up in the first place and then go repeal those laws too. Government does not fix problems they only create them.

Medical providers need to have published set charges for various procedures and provide a warranty for their services, just as do other businesses. Currently there is no way to compare costs between providers or get a warranty. The system is all smoke and mirrors where they all in profession do very well and the public and patients are left holding the bag for unknown costs.

Health care has too many intermediaries that make a bundle but do nothing to improve costs or outcomes. There is no competition.

I don’t like being roped into—coerced with a penalty—something like Obamacare. I hope it crashes and burns, and the sooner the better. The private sector should handle health insurance.
Covering pre-existing conditions is impossible. It’s like being able to watch a horse race, then you can go in and put all your bet on the winner. Eventually management runs out of money to pay the `winners’.

Again, I don’t understand your logic—how does adding a thick layer of federal paper-pushers, how does that make it more economical? You have read, haven’t you, that `co-ops’ are crashing? That’s because it’s pure socialist BS.
Eventually they ran out of other peoples’ money. It’s a Ponzi scheme whereby the rest of us are asked to pay not just for their housing, meals and so forth, but now for their healthcare. Maybe I’d like to spend my money on myself.

Kinda like the IRS and the EPA?

Nope. Kill it. Drive a friggin stake through it's heart, burn the remains and send it to hell.

There. FIXED.

Better shoot it with a few silver bullets somewhere along the line too. We should take no chances.

The senate is going to act to repeal the insurance company and lobbyist full employment act?

Hell will freeze over first.

More BS and theatrics.

With the usual GOP traitors, they will only get 50 votes.

Then say, Oh SO CLOSE! Better luck next time!

And just once, when Harry Reid spews his wretched bile, like he did today, I would like to see one GOP Senator tell that corrupt SOB to go to hell.
