There are no more white cab drivers in NYC. The New York Times reported earlier this year that only 6 percent of yellow cab drivers are even American-born. So when Leon and other blacks are not getting picked up, the drivers passing them by are not white racists. They are mostly Indian and/or Pakistani men (and a very few women) -- men of color. What gives?
I happened to be in a cab driven by a black man from Senegal... this cabbie went off on his own racist rant about the difference between American blacks and those from other countries. He claimed he could tell from half a block away whether someone was an American black or not, and he said he made it a point to try never to pick up American blacks.

Humans make choices. It should not be illegal to make choices.
The problem with the Jim Crow laws that the Democrats put in place was that they did not allow people to make choices — you HAD to do this, and you COULDN’T do that. And that’s wrong. Government should not be limiting the choices that people can make, as long as the people are not engaged in fraud or coercion.
But people should be allowed to make choices. And picking up some potential fares may not be something that a cabbie wants to do.
Dirty little secret: Africans HATE American blacks. Even British blacks are far more sophisticated than American blacks.
You mean other ethnic groups are racist? I onlt=y though whitey was. Guess they dont want to be vicitms of the “black on everyone else crimes”

He told me of a specific example where he picked up an American black man in Manhattan and took him up to Jerome Avenue in the Bronx. “He ran away without paying, and what am I supposed to do? I can’t chase him,” he said.
He wrote it off as lost income but promised himself not to pick up any more American blacks.

Unfortunately, for every good citizen black person who speaks well, shows manners and consideration for others, there are thirty examples of the exact opposite. Think about all those mobs of black teens creating trouble in malls or at restaurants. Other races do it too, absolutely, but we blacks seems to have a corner market on self expression via destructive behavior. It doesn’t help having a president who blames all but the perpetrator for towns going up in smoke.
So why are there nearly no USA-born white cab drivers?
I don't know, and I don't care.
It's not a problem I caused, not a problem I can do anything to fix.
Seems to me it's a problem between a bunch of different Democrat voter constituencies. Therefore it will be solved quickly by the mega geniuses who make up such a large percentage of the Democrat party.
It's not racism, it's pragmatism. The drivers don't want to get ripped off by fare beaters and no-tippers.

I heard the same views from a Jamaican college student who roomed next door to me years and years ago. He had a very dim view of American blacks. The American blacks apparently didn’t care for him either.
That’s a very interesting question. In New York, as well as many other cities, the supply of licenses for taxicabs is limited, making permission to operate a cab a very valuable commodity. Having spent a lot of money for the “medallion,” the contractor wants to get the most return on his investment.
Some factor(s) caused owners to choose dark-skinned immigrant drivers, especially Africans and Middle Easterners, over Americans, as well as Europeans, South Americans, East Asians, etc. Perhaps a combination of willingness to work long hours, low living standards, and moderate English competence?
I don’t know, but surely someone’s written an economics master’s thesis on it.

The ugly secret about the service industry is that everyone who works for tips would discriminate if given the opportunity. Taxicab drivers are in a unique position to profile and discriminate. Not legally, of course, but it is difficult to prove. Driving past someone in a car is not quite as blatant as refusing table service in a restaurant.
People in the service industry often profile for a variety of reasons. Age, gender, race and nationality do play a role. Sometimes it’s merely appearance, personal hygiene, attire or personality. But make no mistake about it, the only color these folks care about is green, and the only motivation they have is paying their bills and feeding their families. As much as civil rights activists would like it to be, this is not a “we don’t serve your kind here†situation.
Discrimination in an interaction that involves tips is not limited to African-Americans or any one group. The reason we hear this grievance from the black community is that it’s easy to lump it in with all the other grievances. This is just another example in the endless list of perceived injustices against blacks in America. Also, regardless of one’s opinion on the modern day civil rights platform, our nation does have a long history of discrimination against blacks.
No one wants to hear an old white woman complain about discrimination. But I can assure you that many elderly white women have been passed up by a cab driver who notices two middle-aged businessmen with their hands in the air just down the road. Chivalry is dead when the bills are due.
The same situation occurred in the black infantry units during the Civil War. The enlisted men in regiments such as the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Infantry, which were made up of mostly free-born men, looked down their noses at the U.S.C.T. units which consisted mostly of contraband blacks.
You are kidding, right? Academics would NEVER be permitted to logically explain any racial phenomenon.
I've known and worked with several Africans....to a man (and woman), they LOATHED American blacks, even calling them the "N" word (which was especially funny coming from a Nigerian).
