Venezuela's opposition party wins parliament in a blow to Maduro and Chavismo

Venezuela's opposition party has claimed the majority of seats in the National Assembly in elections held Sunday, the first major shift in power in the legislative branch since the late President Hugo Chavez took office in 1999.

The Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) took 99 seats to just 46 for the United Social Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Tibisay Lucena, president of Consejo Nacional Electoral announced.

"Venezuela, we won!" said opposition key figure Henrique Capriles, governor of the state of Miranda. "I always told you all, this was the way! Humility, maturity and serenity. Long live the people of Venezuela!"

Setback for Chavismo

The election results are seen as a major setback to the ruling party. This is the first time in 17 years that Chavismo has not won a nationwide election in Venezuela.

"This is a victory for democracy," said Jesus Torrealba, executive secretary for the MUD.

"It's a historic victory, now begins the time for change in Venezuela!" he said to cheering supporters who chanted "Libertad, libertad" at the victory rally at MUD headquarters in Caracas.

Maduro looks like his nickname should be “Biff.”

All I can say is this — Venezuelans have been forced to wait on line for toilet paper, have seen milk shortages
and government troops deployed in stores. The economy is on fire and its currency is a train wreck as the oil state eventually ran out of other people’s money.

What’s there to lose by voting a Chavista out?

Another setback for socialism.

Bernie Sanders has gone into a deep depression.

As pro-sanity powers around the world bring government back to the people, there can only be one outcome: a huge war.

Way down the CNN page it mentions that 22 seats are still undecided = Maduro still trying to stuff ballot boxes.

If even 2 of those 22 seats go to the opposition, it will give them a 3/5 majority of the 167 total seats, and they can really go to work on Maduro. If 14 were to go to the opposition, they’d havee veto-proof majority. With just 99 seats, they can still control the budget and free political prisoners including the Opposition leader.

And in the tradition of south american tribal socialism, maduro will just declare himself el presidente for life, and crack down on the deniers and opponents. Expect all of the opposition to miraculously disappear overnight.

That was my thought. They’ve invested too much, broke too many rules, and hurt too many people in their successful quest for absolute rule. Their lives, not just their ideology, depends on them keeping power.

They’ll do just like the Bolsheviks did when they lost the election, simply dissolve the Assembly and have everyone arrested.

Maduro has already indicated that he would ignore any efforts to reverse the “revolution”, and that his followers would take to the streets and use violence against any who would dare to try.
