They shared tea brewed from berries, ate bear-gnawed bloody salmon, talked about drinking urine and discussed climate change - all while snipers kept watch from the mountains and the official food taster looked on nervously.

Obama, 54, threw himself into the once-in-a-lifetime experience with considerable gusto, shrugging off the food taster, sharing Gryll's water bottle, lighting fires and eating catkin berries.

The TV host revealed that at one point, the president's food inspector secretly sought to swap out a piece of raw salmon that had been picked over by a bear for pre-cooked fish, but Obama went with the bloody leftovers instead.

'One of the big reasons he wanted to do this was to see the effects of climate change close up. He's a dad and he wants to preserve the planet for his children's future and I feel the same way,' Grylls said. Grylls said a team of about 50 Secret Service agents, a staffer tasked with inspecting the president's food, teams of snipers and helicopters accompanied the pair during the day-long trek through a forest and across a glacial outwash.
