How To Stop Donald Trump? A Lesson From Louisiana
Boston Globe ^ | December 19, 2015 | Joanna Weiss

Posted on 12/19/2015 4:40:42 AM PST by Jim Noble

So much for the establishment's efforts to stop Donald Trump. So far, nothing's working - not a thousand earnest think pieces or Jeb Bush's gripes in the latest debate. Not the wrath of news anchors and late-night hosts, who still can't resist booking Trump on their shows, but have started to get ornery during the interviews.

So maybe it's worth looking back to 1991 Louisiana, when establishment Republicans and Democrats banded together to defeat a popular, populist, problematic gubernatorial candidate named David Duke...

I spoke this week to some veterans of the anti-Duke battle, who told me they've been talking up this very idea, while noting that the parallels aren't exact. As hard as it is to divine Donald Trump's motivations - as much as his Bulworth act can sound like bigotry, and possibly is ...

Would a little more digging into Trump's past, plus a loud dose of Louisiana-style dark humor, accomplish what all of the hand-wringing hasn't?

RoosterRedux: "The media despises Trump. They have had their guns blazin' from the start...and they can't so much as scratch him. "

No, so far, the media loves Trump because he is their fresh cash-cow, and they will milk him for all he's worth, while they lead him to the "slaughter-house" to be cut up into hamburger.

Trump vs. Hillary (battle of the sexes) is exactly what they want to produce the First Woman President:

I do believe that whatever his decision(s) would be, they would be in our best National interest, and based upon what was best for America

Yes.

This election, in fact, politics in our time, is not about "conservatives" vs. "liberals". It's about "Americans" vs. "globalists".

This is the key to understanding what so many here seem bewildered by.

The GOPe is all in for globalism, Seriously. More than the Democrats, in fact.

Globalism is the main enemy. Putting globalists in office defeats every other objective we may have.

Even if, occasionally, a globalist does something right (like fighting back after 9/11), he does it for the wrong reasons and fails at execution.

I used to say here that I would vote for Bernie Sanders before I would vote for Jeb Bush, because Bernie Sanders (by my lights) was more of an American than Jeb.

Trump is American, without a doubt, and no one else with a snowball's chance in Hell is, and that's enough for me.

The center of Trump's arguments regarding health care is that ALL Americans have to be taken care of. And the majority of Americans are already covered, before that ObamaCare travesty came along (which Trump is on record for repealing).

The Americans Trump is talking about are those who are unable to afford coverage, the indigent, the disadvantaged, and that is already a matter of public policy going back decades, that if you go to a public hospital and are unable to pay, they cannot refuse to treat you, that's the bottom line.

What Trump has proposed is to eliminate state barriers to insurance companies and allowing ALL carriers to compete within any individual state which will certainly increase competition, lower premiums, and expand the available choices to consumers who are seeking coverage.

And I doubt very much that Trump has an 'inner leftist' in him, and presuming he becomes President, I would be willing to bet that he will have among his many advisers, some really rock solid conservatives who will be certain to present the proper and Constitutional perspective to any decisions that he might contemplate.

Ha, I was just writing a multi-paragraph response that you summed up succinctly. Thank you. You are absolutely correct. At this point, a few more years of a wide open border and our current immigration policies the other “navel watching” items will be a moot point.

Sir, I’m 67 and I have, over the past 40 years, mellowed out on many major issues. Just for ONE illustration, I supported the politics of the Vietnam War in my younger years. Now, I realize how stupid our involvement was given the “political” instability always prevalent in the US. Some would call that a “flip flop”.

Even though I used to, now I don’t support ANY US wars because of ROE’S imposed by liberals on our young fighters and the same “political” instability I previously alluded to. Some would call that a flip flop.

So, I wonder, have you NEVER changed your mind on a major political issue?

Or, are you just a young man or woman?

"However I could see him having a couple of trusted staffers dedicated to lurking here to pick up the conservatives' feelings, and gain ideas... "

Exactly correct, we have moved way passed "Conservative" versus "Liberal". The battle now is to kept some semblance of the Republic we used to be. Job 1 is securing the border and repatriating those living here illegally. Enforce the law should not even be open for debate. That it is just shows how badly the uniparty has governed ever since HW Bush became president. Job 2 is rebuilding American manufacturing and returning middle class jobs to the USA. That should not be political either. Job 3 is joining with Russia and united all of Western Civilization and crushing radical Islam again that should not be political. If Trump can do any one of these three (Job 1 first please) he'll be a great President.

As long as he’s rude to the right people, America’s enemies, foreign and domestic. Right now we have that problem in reverse-this _resident and Congress spitting in the faces of law-abiding taxpaying Americans, while kissing the azzes of our enemies.

If they try their dirty tricks like they pulled in the mid-terms, Trump’s bluntness will be just the ticket, I hope his street smarts and survival instincts live up to their billing, he’ll need them, because he will be facing both establishment left and right as enemies.

Why, hello there Sen. McConnell...!

If you check the polling internals, you find Trump pulling unprecedented levels of support from women, blacks, and Hispanics...thereby undermining the Dem pillars of support *and* fulfilling the "big tent" you GOP-e types are constantly autofellating over.

Nice try though, troll.

And as for your pic: if you wanted to titillate with an upskirt photo, you should've picked someone better looking.

“But oh my! What fun it would be, if he becomes POTUS, brings his family and class to the WH, and more importantly fulfills his promise to make America great again. “

My biggest problem with President Trump is Mr. “Art of the Deal” will compromise with Dems and the GOPe to get things done. I truly think Cruz will stick to the Constitution no matter what. That said, Trump IS my #2 choice.

I think there’s every chance he will be a poison pill to conservatism. I also think that right now, conservatism isn’t even in the picture, when our own so-called conservative representatives are selling America out. America has to survive before the left-right dichotomy is even a factor again. The influx of illegals, and legal immigrants for that matter, considering how the mid-east “refugees” are being swept through without a glance at their histories, etc, are a threat to all of us, our lives, our jobs, everything. See how the only thing the right has won any battles on are the unions. I despise unions as much as the next conservative, but I find it awfully suspicious that the only battle for any conservative principles our “conservative” representatives have even fought, much less won, is the battle against the labor unions.

I am in favor of anyone who can jerk victory out of Hillarys mouth and leaves her gasping for breath!
If Trump is the guy, great, he's got my vote!
Her obvious belief that it is her turn to be president just p!$$es me off so bad!

Alpha males aren’t off-putting to me, I’ve lived amongst that type all my life, and I know that the swaggering is just part of their toolkit, it really says nothing about the real man beneath it.

Here is the horrible curmudgeon, indoctrinating a future generation:

BTW, this article is asinine.

The GOP-E wants a fight, they got one.

We’re sick of being led by stupid people—the omnibus bill passed yesterday as a case study.

Can you really say who or what anyone running for office is, or will be. Applying rigid ideological litmus tests to candidates is simplistic and unproductive. They create facades and tell voters what they want to hear, then upon being elected, they perform for their donors and friends.

I can understand Trump being an enigma to many. I can understand conservative left brain ideologues rejecting him. I can understand those who are uncomfortable with his style, but I am ready to follow a proved leader who is going to be right most of the time, and wont take crap from media or political insiders.

I don’t even know whether that’s a consideration now, considering all the “Tea Party” and “real conservative” candidates we’ve put over, some who even fairly conservative records, who, once they got to Congress and felt assured of at least a full term, fell right into line with the America-destroying GOP, using the ‘rats as their excuse, even after they own Congress. And using every dirty trick in the book to take conservative candidates who looked they might be another Cruz or Sessions, the ones who don’t seem to have been bought, the ones they didn’t think they could buy.

It’s really coming down to that now, “can this man be bought by our, American law-abiding tax-paying citizens, enemies?”

If Jeb could have taken him down with his past, he would have already started trying, he wouldn’t be waiting until he’s in single digits and almost a mere memory to voters, to do it.
