Kurt Russell to 'The View': Founding Fathers Had 'Very Strong Reason' for Second Amendment

Friday on ABC's "The View," actor Kurt Russell explained his view on the reasoning for the Second Amendment, saying in part it was established by the Founding Fathers for certain protections of its people.

Russell said, "In reality, when we're dealing with things like, terrorism, whatnot, we're all going to have different opinions on how to do it. How to deal with it. Mine happens to be that, I think there's a very strong reason the Founding Fathers had for the Second Amendment. And that is that no government ever hasn't had to fight its own people, and its own people hasn’t had to fight its own government. We had our civil war. If that Second Amendment hadn't have been there, those people wouldn't have had the opportunity to do what they considered defending their life, their way, their style of living. So I agree with that. I think that's an important part of our existence. It's basically that simple."

Good job Kurt Russell.

Yup. I always thought him to be a man's man. Right up there with Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot.

How can they mentally undress him? They haven’t the brainpower to even dress themselves.

Co-host Joy Behar said, I think people more object to the excesses of the Second Amendment. Not the Second Amendment. Its the boom, boom, boom, boom, boom guns.

The utter stupidity of this statement defies description.

I bet Joy Behar and some of the other gals had to halt taping for an emergency Depends change after that. From what I’ve read, and the few clips I’ve seen/heard from that show, logic and basic truths don’t sit well with them.

I like Kurt Russell. I think he understands way better than most in Hollywood about the importance of the 2nd amendment. He was very diplomatic. Maybe too much so. Yeah, we can have disagreements over issues, but the 2nd amendment is pretty darn clear. I don’t want Joy Behar and others of her calibre tinkering with it.

Almost had a chance to meet Selleck three years ago at a Friends of Abe function, but Jon Voight got in the way. LOL. Seriously, I had worked with Jon on a screenplay about a college prof and after a moment, he recognized me. So, I never got to meet Tom. Sinese was there too, as MC.

I think she was referring to automatic guns, which have been outlawed in private hands since 1934.

What an idiot. THATS their level of discourse.

He does. Having said that I think you have to be careful when debating not to give your opponent a good stick to hit you have the head with.

Here’s a Black woman sitting there and Kurt brought up the Civil War as a good reason for people to have weapons to defend their way of life. Whoopie could rightfully have said, waiiiit a minute. Their way of life impacted my ancestors very negatively. That would have been a legitimate rejoinder.

While Kurt’s inclusion of the Civil War was a decent argument academically, a lot of folks will hear that and say that’s exactly why we shouldn’t have gun rights.

IMO < it would have been better to keep it on terrorism, which everyone understands. Bring up the founders and then remind folks we should have a right to be able to defend ourselves against terrorist.

Kurt is obviously pro second amendment and I respect that and him a great deal on that point.

you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail."

the excesses of the Second Amendment

What exactly would those be? Who gets to decide what is "excess?" And doesn't that very statement constitute an infringement of the right to keep and bear arms, you know, the right the Second Amendment says SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED?
