Your concern is Biblical. Three times in Romans 1 Paul speaks of people who, though they knew better(knew, in fact, of the existence of God), ceased to acknowledge Him and descended into degrading passions. Three times the Scripture says God. “gave them over” to their “depraved minds”, etc. The implication being, once God ‘gave them over’, there was no going back.
The only caution is that God alone knows when a human has reached this point. We know when they *look* like they’ve reached this point, but only God knows the heart.

That’s exactly what I believe, and what my dad preached during his 60 years in the ministry. And it’s true that only God knows where that line is for each person. I’ve always liked the song, “God’s Final Call” by Peterson; it says a lot.
