Hitler thought he could break the will of the British people to resist. He never imagined the British would be in a position to retaliate.

Every ton of bombs scattered over England by the Luftwaffe’s inaccurate and indiscriminate bombing was requited by 350 tons dropped much more precisely by the RAF and USAAF. The British were largely out for revenge, the U.S. were looking for military targets, but both had a mix of targets.

The U.S. Eighth Air Force targeted Berlin, because it was the only city that the Germans would defend after 1943. The point of the attacks was to destroy the Luftwaffe’s fighter wing preparatory to D-Day. Berlin was attacked to open the way to Normandy.

In 1944, German fighter losses prior to D-Day were severe:

Month %Fighters %Pilots
Feb 33 18
March 56 22
April 43 20
May 50 25

German pilot losses could not be replaced. They had no pipeline to supply well trained new pilots, and many instructors became causalities themselves.

For some reason those photoshopped rockets reminds me of what you get when you play “Jingle bells, jingle bells” backwards:

“Missile revolt, missile revolt”

(strange but true)

Takes 2 years minimum to train a combat pilot. Accelerated training programs just got a lot of newbies killed.

The Japanese solution was the Kamikaze — a human cruise missile. Even those pilots we so bad that they had trouble finding & hitting the targets.

While terrifying and disruptive, the damage they did in no serious manner deterred the British one bit, and probably stiffened their resolve sufficiently to firebomb several German targets, with nary a twinge of conscience.

The V(engenace) weapons were a response to Allied firebombing of civilian population centers.

Actually, the V-weapons and the RAF's incendiary attacks against civilian targets weren't "responses" of any sort.

Instead, both were a recognition of the existing navigational state-of-the-art. Bomber Command was incapable of performing precision bombing at night and began attacking city-sized targets because that was the limit of their accuracy.

Similarly, the accuracy of the V-weapons was limited to city-sized targets. So, that's what they were aimed at.

“Without small atomic warheads, ballistic missiles are not practical weapons.”

The Nazis were working on nuclear weapons. IIRC their initial estimate of warhead size would have been within the limits of the V-2/A4 payload (1000kg). They also had the standard arsenal of chemical and biological weapons.

And who’s to say that if the Allied bombing campaign hadn’t been successful that we wouldn’t have resorted to missiles with HE warheads?

Because ballistic missiles with HE warheads, especially with the accuracy of the V2, are ineffective weapons. They consume more resources to build than the damage they inflict.

It exaggerates for dramatic effect but its purposes are to scare Israel’s enemies and create sympathy among its friends, IMHO.

I call it propaganda and disinformation in support of Israel, a traditional tactic of war.

This report in particular is designed to create a new sense of what the war in Syria is about that subtly points out Russia’s actions to help Assad are not always in Israel’s best interests.

“Because ballistic missiles with HE warheads, especially with the accuracy of the V2, are ineffective weapons. They consume more resources to build than the damage they inflict.”

But they were also intended to be terror weapons. You’re not worried whether they’re accurate enough to hit the aircraft factory, you’re concerned that one is going to randomly land on your house. The Germans were not any better able to hit Britain than with V-1s and V-2s. And the possibility existed that they could switch to chemical or biological warheads at any time.

In fact, the -entire- V2 program cost about the same as the Manhattan project and produced the results of about 2 Air raids from the 8th Air Force.

Yeah, but when we won the war we swiped the technology (and some of the technologists, too) and mated it with atomic warheads to make ICBMs...

The question in the United States in the 1950’s was “Can the AEC (Atomic Energy Commission) make ballistic missiles practical?” Without small atomic warheads, ballistic missiles are not practical weapons.

Even Ernst Stavro Blofeld knew this:

You're incorrect. It was actually after the bombing of Lubeck that Hitler ordered mass production of the V-2 (before which he was uninterested). The Germans had turned their efforts away from bombing Britain to fight the Russians. It was only after the concentration on civilians by the British that he sought to respond and diverted resources to do so.
