Is nonconformity and freethinking a mental illness? According to the newest addition of the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), it certainly is. The manual identifies a new mental illness called “oppositional defiant disorder” or ODD. Defined as an “ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile and defiant behavior,” symptoms include questioning authority, negativity, defiance, argumentativeness, and being easily annoyed.

In related news, the druggie in our White House wants to deny self-defense capabilities to those he wants to define as mentally ill. Socialists are no different today than the national socialists of the 1930s and 1940s or the soviet socialists of the 1920s to 1980s.

This is just further down the path of liberalism. They took out a rather distinct and unambiguous sexual deviancy, and are now adding in everyone who disagrees with them.

Who’s surprised?

Must be very old article. 5-6 years? Would be odd
to see DSM IV referenced in a current article. I don’t see the problem with a pediatric ODD Dx anyway.

Eating their own, are they?

freethinker
From The Collaborative International Dictionary of English v.0.48 :

  Freethinker \Free"think`er\, n.
One who speculates or forms opinions independently of the
authority of others; esp., in the sphere or religion, one who
forms opinions independently of the authority of revelation
or of the church; an unbeliever; -- a term assumed by deists
and skeptics in the eighteenth century.
     [1913 Webster]

Atheist is an old-fashioned word: I'm a freethinker,
           child. --Addison.

Syn: Infidel; skeptic; unbeliever. See Infidel.
          [1913 Webster]

The problem is that the gawd dammed lawyers emptied out the nuthouses in the 1970’s and put the inmates on the street without a plan to prevent the chaos that would soon result. Of course, the first thing that the nuts wanted was a symbol of security...a gun. The nuts didn’t obtain that symbol by legitimate ways, they stole them. After obtaining that symbol they went to Chicago and shot each other at a rate of 30 to 40 per weekend. The solution. Put them back in nuthouses and guard them. Keep them well medicated.

I looked up “oppositional defiant disorder” and I could only find that it applied to children.
