New North Carolina (Atlantic Coast) Pipeline Could Save Citizens Money

North Carolina's citizens could see an annual energy savings of over $134 million in a few years. That's what Joint Legislative Commission on Energy Policy was told regarding the benefits of a large natural gas pipeline project that should be underway soon.

The commission met on Tuesday, Jan. 5, and heard an update on the progress of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline that will stretch from West Virginia to near Norfolk and then down into North Carolina. Bruce McKay of Dominion power company said that construction on the nearly $5 billion project could begin later this year and be in service by 2018.

North Carolina portion is projected to cost $1.2 billion for 192 miles of pipeline through eight counties. The economic benefit to the state from the construction of the pipeline is estimated at $680 million and nearly 4,500 jobs, and when complete will mean about a million dollars a year in property taxes for Northampton County for a gas compression station that will be built as part of the project.

In addition to the $134 million in annual energy savings, McKay said that the state is likely to realize additional economic benefits after the pipeline is completed, such as $12 million in economic activity, 925 jobs and $6 million in local tax revenue.

The pipeline project goes through multiple steps of regulatory scrutiny and approval, as well as opportunities for the public to voice their concerns.

"The public" my eye.

There are 6 gas pipeline projects in works in WV. They are trying to get it to markets. This will happen about the time Obama has killed coal, he will then go after gas.

They will never see the savings.

Rates will go up. Building costs of the pipeline will be bigger than expected. More money needed for current system maintenance and expansion. If people use less rates will go up to make up projected differences. If people use more rates go up to reduce usage of current limited supply.
