GOP Debate Winner: Ted Cruz
Legal Insurrection ^ | 1/14/16 | William A. Jacobson

Tonight’s GOP debate was Ted Cruz’s night. He went right after Donald Trump multiple times, but in a way that came across as forceful and informed, but not nasty. He also fended off a pretty vigorous attack from Marco Rubio. His strongest points came early and against Trump, when the audience would be the largest.

Trump was runner-up. He had a good moment on Cruz’s slam on “NY Values,” but I’m not sure how defending NY values plays outside NY. His performance will confirm pre-existing views of him.

I know everyone hates Luntz but his focus group had Cruz as the overwhelming winner.

During a live, post-debate “Kelly File,” a focus group of 26 South Carolina Republican voters overwhelmingly said that Ted Cruz was the big winner of the Fox Business Network GOP debate.

Cruz was particularly praised by the participants for his back-and-forth with Donald Trump over his natural-born citizenship.

Cruz destroyed Trump on the birther question, and Trump looked like a fool on it. But Cruz did not do well on the “New York values” thing, while Trump did do well on it.

It was lights out for Ted Cruz!!! Trump slaughtered him easily tonight!!! Cruz could have had the VP slot. Now he joins Nikki Haley on the garbage heap, begging Trump to forgive him!!! All the online polls are showing Trump won the debate in a landslide victory!!! Finished..........Kasich, Bush, Fiorina, Huckabee, Paul, Christie, Curz & Rubio!!!

Cruz won but a Rubio was damn impressive. I can’t believe I barely survived the Rudy FR purge and Trump is now FR leading candidate

Idid not like how the moderators shut cruz off on his rebuttal to Rubio.

Now i have noticed Fox news has had almost everyone on for post debate but not Cruz.

I don’t put much faith in Frank Luntz because he tries to push the agenda.

Idid not like how the moderators shut cruz off on his rebuttal to Rubio.

They were trying to help Rubio and hurt Cruz. They keep having Rubio (and Trump) on all their shows. The never have Cruz on.

[[I think Conservatives make up 30% of the population in these blue states.]]

Only because of upstate NY- I’ll be very surprised if downstate NY has 30% republicans

Predictably, the Cruzers insist that Ted won, the Trumpsters insist that The Donald won, and that Santorum guy over in the corner is sure that he somehow won. It was a good debate, each candidate had strong and less-strong moments, and the public (especially the undecideds and those who may soon drop their second-tier candidate for one of the top tier folk) got a good look at each.

I thought Cruz had a very strong night overall and the only exchange he lost was his back and forth with Donald Trump over New York Values. I agree with Cruz there on principle but he did a poor job of explaining it and allowed Trump to turn it around on him. However, I think that Cruz crushed Trump badly enough on the birther issue that I would still give the debate to him but I do think Trump came in a strong second.

Agreed. Night was Trump’s...only wish he had specifically mentioned first responders and he might be able to carry NY.
