"If I hadn't had the gun, this news story would be about me and my mother being dead."
A man in Dekalb County, Georgia is thankful today for the presence of a gun in his home, crediting that fact with saving his own life and his mother's after two men forced their way into his home and began beating them and demanding money.
From ABC: "When I opened the door, these two guys stormed in with guns and started pistol-whipping me and took me to the ground," said Hernandez.
One of the intruders went after his mother, who was trying to escape.
"He started pistol whipping and kicking her in the side," he said.
The son's attacker demanded money and forced him through the house at gunpoint. He took him to a guest bedroom and threw him to the ground.
"He put a gun to my head,â Hernandez said, âand I just started fighting back."
Hernandez said it just so happened that his father's old hunting rifle was stashed away in that guest room. Hernandez had been thinking about refinishing it. During the scuffle, Hernandez managed to grab the rifle, and he started firing.

and it just happened to be loaded...
A loaded old hunting rifle in a guest room. Well, that's interesting.
I’ve got a new loaded AK-47 in the bedroom.Doesn’t everybody?
In this case, an “uninvited” guest room...had to say it.
Didn’t think of that. Just assumed when he got away to that room he loaded it. Maybe he’s fudging the story because he’s afraid of consequences for shooting them thanks to the anti-gun atmosphere?
But who would leave a loaded rifle standing in a guest room? Perhaps I'm just being too suspicious. Eight years of Obama will do that to a person.
Successfully fighting back against a pressed pistol with a rummaged up long gun sounds like an amazing maneuver. This is a “grace of God” story not just a “Second amendment” story. And we should always let our stories be “grace of God” stories.
All my weapons are always loaded.
Exactly why you never open the door to a stranger without a gun in your hand hidden behind your back.....especially on Halloween (if you give out candy)
The only unloaded weapon in my house is an old .22 rifle, zipped into it’s case......of course, we have no kids to worry about.
The media is trying to figure out if Hernandez is a white-hispanic or just an hispanic...
Always assume that that empty gun lying in the corner awaiting a re-finishing job is loaded.
Missing from this story.
1) the surviving robber has been charged with the murder of his buddy.
2) the mother suffered a heart attack.
And, of course, the race of the perps. Which leads to only one conclusion.
Mossberg 500
i have loaded weapons in the bedroom and near every door in the house, but not ALL i own are loaded...
No, mine is a loaded short 12 gauge double gun.
Our friends and neighbors in 1960s rural Indiana had plenty of hunting guns leaning in a convenient corner, ready to shoot any predator ,be it feral canine, hawk, or other. There were no home iinvasions. Today too many wish to protect all kinds of predators.
The losers here are also the local PD homicide division and the DA, who were no doubt chagrined at not having work. In one sense, the war on legal guns is a hoped-for jobs program for those two groups.
I don’t have anything new, but I have old and they are loaded.
An unloaded firearm is like a hammer without a handle, fairly useless.
