I can see both sides of this, oddly enough:
1. Old white liberals are the most racist people I’ve ever met. And that is the Oscar jury. So the theory is plausible.
2. On the other side, the movies with black main characters in them last year pretty well sucked.
Forget the Oscars, how about the Nobel prizes?
Shouldn’t we award those based on race, and not genius/merit?

People seriously overestimate the politics of AMPAS. Most Best Picture winners are fairly conservative.
I had written a really caustic post but on further review, it was not something I wanted a jury to see.
I’ll let all of you share your sentiments.

Then you have a guy like Tyler Perry, who probably doesn’t give a fig what the Academy thinks of his movies, and every movie he makes makes a ton of money.
Maybe if there was some good films made by blacks or had black actors. Several films that had white leading actors were replaced by black actors totally bombed. Let’s see a remake of Gone With The Wind starring a black actor and see how it does or any big name film. Rear Window, From Whom The Bell Tolls, Citizen Kane (starring Morgan Freeman?) Here you go - Casablanca. The list goes on.

I’m shocked that ‘Inside Out’ wasn’t nominated for Best Picture. I’m pretty sure it was better than most of the stuff that was.
FWIW, I virtually never watch modern movies, so I have no idea if some black actors or black movie-makers are being unfairly snubbed. That's beside the point.
But to accuse Hollyweird libs of racism because they haven't nominated x amount of people of a certain color for awards is as barmy as criticizing conservatives for not having enough black constituents.

I would say that since the 1970s, blacks have been on par or even better than their white counterparts in some movies. With blacks getting leading-man parts and getting paid over $20 million a movie.
You might. Remember the remake of “Annie” with that black cast? How well did it do? Then “Wild Wild West” with Will Smith? Then too, McHales Navy with a black Ensign Carter. Then there was that made for TV show about the Wizard of Oz with an all black cast; wonder how well that did?

Meh. The idea that there could ever be a “best movie” or “best actor” or “best song” for that matter is just plain ignorant. These are entirely subjective opinions. Myself, I thought that “Team America” was the best movie the year it came out. A lot of people would disagree. So what? This entire slanging match about the Oscars is meaningless.
A lot of actors put a lot of stock in the Oscars. However if you’ve ever met actors you’d know that far too many are, well to use an overused word, stupid. Far too many are illiterate and couldn’t even comprehend a newspaper or a People magazine. In the world of Hollywood someone like Alec Baldwin is an intellectual. Really, he is. I think he read a book or two once.
