Adlai Stevenson was a Unitarian and therefore, in many people's minds, not a Christian. So was William Howard Taft (but not his son Robert A. Taft). Both won at least one primary.

The biggest enemies of social conservatives have been liberal Republicans. They want our votes, but not our values. Cruz appears to be one of “us”. Trump may prove to be fine (and I hope so, if he is elected), but I doubt it. I’ve been bitten too many times to work for a very recent and very convenient semi-convert to our side. I simply don’t believe that he will be any different, and I won’t exert any effort to elect him. I am no longer on the plantation.
