The Iraq war being a mistake or not is one thing.
How the Iraq war was prosecuted was definitely a mistake.

“Staying the course” is the title for the honest biographer’s best seller where mission and sacrifice are measured against political perseverance. Korea and Vietnam come to mind, but it’s a rich subject that obviously pertains to Iraq I and II.
The vast majority supported the Iraq War. And only a minority continued to support the investments years thereafter. Indifference prevailed as far as I’m concerned.

Call it anything you want, it was Bush’s intent to engineer that in the aftermath.
It would have been a sickly child at best whereas other forms of government would have been more robust. Democracy plays well with a Judeo-Christian mindset. Not an Islamic one.
Sickly child or not, Obama and the Left before together aborted the investments towards something better than the ISIS parasites they inevitably spawned.
Which of course is an evil. Nobody says it wasn’t. Sticking directly with Iraq could have allowed a revamp of their government structure that recognized that democracy did not work but a kingdom would, without all this pain.
However God doesn’t let pain happen without any reason at all. Sometimes it is the only thing that can wake us up to the knowledge that there is a problem that needs to be addressed. Standing around blaming is like getting distracted with the alligators when the goal was to drain the swamp.
