Kuwait to Sign Multibillion-Euro Fighter Jet Deal With Italy

Kuwait and Italy will finalize a multibillion-euro deal next week for the Gulf state to purchase Eurofighter jets, Kuwait's defense minister has said.

Sheikh Khaled Jarrah Al-Sabah did not specify the number of planes involved in the deal but the Eurofighter consortium said in September that Kuwait had agreed to buy 28 fighter jets.

'Italian Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti will visit Kuwait next week to sign the Eurofighter warplanes deal,' Al-Sabah was quoted as saying by the official KUNA news agency

Over the past seventy years over $30 trillion dollars worth of Mideast oil has been extracted and sold to the world. What do the people there have to show for it. They spent huge amounts of money on armaments. Are they peaceful or secure? Do they boast world class schools or health care facilities? Have even one of all the advanced aircraft they purchased been ever deployed effectively? (OK maybe a few). The fact is they have squandered their good fortune and their prospects are not good.

Apparently Kuwait is also planning to buy 28 F/A-18s from Boeing. Why not standardize on one aircraft? Does the Eurofighter Typhoon do something the F/A-18 can’t, or is this just about keeping both the US and Europe happy?

The best advantage for the USA would be for the rest of the Western world to use the F-35 flying anvil E/F and for us to go back to the F-22.

Hopefully Trump or Cruz will make that happen.

The F-35 is a POS. It can be outmaneuvered by the F-15, outperformed by the F-18 and the price/performance of the F-16 far surpasses it.

The F-35 is the definition of a camel: a mouse built to government specifications. The idea was great, but mission creep destroyed its usefulness.

One aircraft type cannot perform all missions. One country source means you are at their mercy if they decide to embargo spare parts.

But a maintenance headache, incompatibility between spare parts and a need to train mechanics and pilots on two completely different systems. Kuwait is utterly dependent on the US and it's inconceivable that they'd pursue a military effort that didn't have the blessing, backing and material support of the US. Not sure I understand why they'd see a need to diversify to two fighter-plane systems unless it's simply to keep Europe happy with them for political reasons.

It’s a political backup option (keep both Euros and Yanks happy), which also offers some operational advantages.

The Eurofighter is an excellent air-to-air capabilities, but only secondary strike capabilities. The Super Hornet is more of a mud mover. Though they are more or less in the same weight category, the two aircraft do complement each other.
